Washington, D.C., December 12, 2014 - At a celebration at VOA headquarters in Washington honoring the launch, on December 12, 1949, of VOA's first broadcast in Ukrainian, the nation's ambassador to the United States announced that a journalist in the Ukrainian Service will receive a prestigious honor from Kyiv.

Ambassador Oleksandr Motsyk said that Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has awarded Myroslava Gongadze with the Order of Princess Olga, a Ukrainian civil decoration bestowed on women of outstanding personal merit. The award, the ambassador said, is for Gongadze's "personal contribution to the development of journalism, active civic efforts, and high professional skills." Gongadze is anchor of the Ukrainian Service's flagship TV program Chas-Time, a news and current affairs program that is broadcast daily throughout Ukraine in primetime.
The ambassador also brought with him a message from President Poroshenko praising the Ukrainian Service for "its contribution to the formation of a free democratic Ukraine." By telling the truth about events in Ukraine, the president said, the service was assisting "the defenders of democracy in winning not only on battlefields, but also in human souls."
In addition to Ambassador Motsyk, U.S. diplomats, human rights experts, representatives of the Ukrainian-American community, along with past and present members of the Ukrainian Service, joined VOA Director David Ensor in honoring the service on its 65th anniversary.
VOA Ukrainian was a beacon of freedom for Ukrainians throughout the Cold War, and it remains so today, as it faces intense pressure from Russian President Putin. "No one could have predicted," said VOA Director Ensor, "that this past year would be one of the most important years in Ukrainian history." During the Euromaiden protests as well as during the violent government crackdown and the Russian aggression, Ensor said, VOA's Ukrainian Service always rose to the challenge of keeping its audience informed.
That audience, aside from being informed, is also large, the largest of any international broadcaster in Ukraine. According to the latest research, almost one in five adults in Ukraine - 18 percent - watch VOA Ukrainian TV programs weekly.
Adrian Karmazyn, Chief of VOA Ukrainian, said he was "honored to work with such a talented and dedicated team of journalists who have such a tremendous and positive impact on the media environment in Ukraine."
Praise for the service also came from Capitol Hill. Representative Chris Van Hollen said, "through its daily reporting on U.S. politics, foreign policy, social issues, business, culture and the arts, VOA provides comprehensive, accurate and authoritative information that Ukrainians can employ in strengthening their nascent democracy, market economy and independent statehood."
In addition to Chas-Time, a daily 15-minute TV program, the service broadcasts a weekly 20-minute magazine program called Window on America. It also recently began broadcasting, in Russian, a five-minute daily TV news segment called Studio Washington that targets Russian-speaking Ukrainians.

In the 1920s, the station was known as 3LO before undergoing a name change. It turned 90 years old on 13 October.
774 3LO first went to air on 13 October 1924, with an outside broadcast of a performance of 'La Boheme' featuring Dame Nellie Melba, from His
Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne.
In 1928, the Sydney-based Australian Broadcasting Company took over the station, and in 1932, the Australian Broadcasting Commission

What is happening to Longwave 252?

On 27 October 2014, RTE´s Longwave 252 broadcast will close
down. Longwave listeners should retune to RTE Radio 1 on FM.
Other Listeners are not affected.

Why is the service closing

The audience for the LW252 service is very small

The vast majority of the RTE Radio 1 audience listens to the superior sound of FM

Longwave broadcasting is out of date, has poor audio quality and provides unreliable reception

LW is inconsistent with environment best practice and represents poor value for money

At the end of October, the Democratic Voice of Burma (DVB) will stop producing its ethnic language radio program after 21 years of broadcasting, a decision revealed yesterday during a meeting of staff members from DVB’s Ethnic Groups’ Program.
“Because there are more and more magazines and journals [being distributed] in the country, the audience [listening through] short-wave radio has become smaller. We broadcast the news at six in the morning and nine in the evening, but at those times the audience has demonstrated a preference for newspapers and journals instead of waiting for us,” said DVB editor U Khin Maung Soe.

According to a US-based group which collects data on short-wave radio audiences in Burma, the DVB’s short-wave radio programs only attract 2% of the Burmese exile radio station audience, the smallest percentage among the four exile stations.
Due to such small audience numbers, DVB donors have suggested that the organization stop broadcasting radio programs and produce TV media programs instead. However, changing from radio to TV broadcasting may pose challenges and difficulties for those in charge of the DVB’s Ethnic Groups’ Program.
“Although at the previous meeting it was mentioned that TV training would be conducted, and assistance for any necessary technical training would be provided, nothing has been implemented yet. And now, in the past 1-2 months the situation has changed and we haven’t had time to prepare,” said the director of the Karenni ethnic program.
During yesterday’s Ethnic Groups’ Program online meeting, broadcast directors from the DVB’s Ethnic Groups’ Program discussed common difficulties posed by TV production. For example, given the fact that the directors live on the Thai-Burmese border they find it difficult to obtain video footage and voice recordings.

They also mentioned the lack of video-editing devices and materials as well as technical IT knowledge.
The DVB’s current ethnic language radio program is broadcast in Kachin, Karenni, Karen, Chin, Mon, Rakhine, and Shan languages.
The National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma (NCGUB) launched the DVB Burmese Program in Oslo, Norway and also broadcasts from Oslo. For its part, the DVB Ethnic Language Program was founded by ethnic armed groups on July 19, 1993 at the Karen Nation Union’s former Marnepalaw headquarters.

No quiero perder mi lengua”, dijo a Efe Mayancela.

Japan’s public broadcaster NHK will gather media scholars and researchers in Tokyo to present findings and discuss current issues affecting public broadcasting.
NHK and Keio University will host the RIPE@2014 conference from 27-29 August on the theme “Public Service Media Across Boundaries.”
The biennial Re-Visionary Interpretations of Public Enterprise (RIPE) series is an international project dedicated to reinventing, redefining and recreating the meanings and practices of public service in media in the 21st century and promoting discussion, debate, critique and conceptualization of what is needed.
Organisers say that economic growth and the development of technology have created cross-boundary societies in which people face increasing movement globally, as well as the convergence of broadcasting and communication.
“The key words ‘Across Boundaries’ represent the revolutionary change in use of media by broadcaster and audience,” the organisers say.

For many visitors to the Seychelles’ main island of Mahe, the transmission masts of the BBC’s Indian Ocean Short Wave Relay Station on Grand Anse are a fixture. It is a place they remember from driving by when enroute to or from their resorts or taking a drive across the island.

The station, which was built by the BBC in the 1980s, has, however, served its purpose in this day and age of satellite communications. People in Africa and on the Indian Ocean islands today listen to the BBC World Service and the BBC Africa Service on web radio or watch the news live on TV. Learning of the base closure, therefore ended active transmissions at the end of March of this year.

Information from Victoria speaks of bids being invited for equipment from the offices and stores although it is not entirely clear if the landmark masts will remain in place or be dismantled, then shipped elsewhere or perhaps sold as scrap metal.

Also open is the question as to what will happen to the prime land although suggestions have been made that the site may be developed as it is close to the Grand Anse beach. Time for visitors to Mahe to take perhaps that one last look and picture before sooner or later this landscape feature is gone.

The decision to close the site has been taken due to changing commercial and technological circumstances. As countries develop and their media markets open, listening and viewing habits have changed. New technology has changed the way audiences listen to BBC programmes and reduced the importance of shortwave broadcasts in much of the area currently served by the IORS, making the IORS commercially unviable.

Voice of America and Radio Free Asia are ending their shortwave radio broadcasts into China. The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), which oversees both news agencies, determined that only a handful of countries still have large enough audiences for shortwave broadcasts.
The announcement was made in early July, yet news is only now beginning to circulate in the Chinese press. The late realization is likely due to how the BBG announcement was made. China was just not included on the list.

A press release from VOA states that all shortwave broadcasts for “English News programs to Asia” were ended on June 3. Also eliminated were shortwave broadcasts for Azerbaijani, Bangla, English (Learning), Khmer, Kurdish, Lao, and Uzbek, according to the press release.
According to the BBG’s list of service changes, however, shortwave broadcasts will continue in Mandarin, Cantonese, Tibetan, and Uyghur.

Radio Free Asia (RFA) and Voice of America (VOA) did not immediately respond to phone calls requesting comment.

The VOA press release states, “broadcasting via shortwave is expensive, and its use by listeners has been on the decline for years.” It notes that BBG determined the level of impact doesn’t warrant the cost, and so it “no longer favors broadcasts via this medium to most of the world.”

The cuts only include shortwave broadcasts. Services will continue on AM radio (longwave) or FM radio (very high frequency), television, and online.

In addition to VOA and RFA, the cuts extend to broadcasts of the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and the Middle East Broadcast Networks.

Most countries will only see reduced times in the shortwave broadcasts. The cuts are determined by the number of shortwave broadcast listeners in each country, and whether alternatives are widely available.
No cuts are mentioned for the Mandarin, Cantonese, Tibetan, or Uyghur broadcasts.

WASHINGTON, D.C., August 11, 2014 - After 72 years on air, the Voice of America Greek Service -- one of the longest-running language services -- is signing off today for the last time, bidding adieu to loyal listeners in Greece, Cyprus, and beyond.
VOA Director David Ensor called the Greek Service "a small but mighty group of talented, dedicated journalists, who for over seven decades served as an unbiased, objective news source."
The Greek Service was established on November 1, 1942, and went on to cover historic turning points of modern Greece, from the civil war in the late 1940s to the accession to the European Union, and most recently the country's struggles to remain an integral part of the E.U.

The Greek Service was among the first services at the Voice of America to transition to exclusively affiliate-based broadcasting in the early 1990s. One of VOA's smallest language services, the staff provided regular and ad-hoc content to its affiliate stations in Greece, with unique perspectives on U.S. politics, coverage of issues concerning the Greek-American community, and live Q&As during major global news events.
Ioannis Spanolios, general manager of one of VOA's first-ever affiliates, SKAI Radio and TV in Greece, said, "We are saddened because our collaboration that lasted close to a quarter century has come to a close...because we are losing a valuable news source from the other side of the Atlantic."

VOA Greek Service Chief Anna K. Morris said of her time with the Greek Service, "I feel absolutely privileged to have been given the opportunity to present American perspectives to Greek audiences for over 22 years."

It is with regret that SW Radio Africa announces that after 13 years, our shortwave broadcasts are to end on Friday 18th July.

You have welcomed us into your homes since our first shortwave broadcast on 19th December 2001.

Our broadcasts will continue on our website, via Channel Zim through TV decoders, and by various other forms of new media.

We know how much these shortwave broadcasts have meant to our listeners in more remote areas who have so little access to news and information, and we sincerely regret that we will no longer be able to provide this service.

We would like to thank our listeners who have been such loyal supporters for so many years and also for their willingness to share the stories of their lives with us on our Callback program. This has allowed people all over the world to have a better understanding of the many crises that Zimbabweans continue to face.

We can only hope that one day, sooner rather than later, there is real media freedom that allows Zimbabweans, wherever they are in the country, easy access to what is a basic human right – freedom of information and expression.

South Africa launched its first ever DRM (medium wave) transmission with Radio Pulpit starting a trial on 1440 kHz broadcasting using a 25kW transmitter (and broadcasting 10kW DRM) using a low profile antenna. The launch happened on 1 July 2014.

The broadcast, with up to two programmes and eventually all the extra features and benefits offered by DRM, will cover greater Pretoria and parts of Johannesburg.

The test conducted by the broadcaster in co-operation with Sentech (DRM Consortium member), the major South African network operator, and Broadcom International will run until next year.

The DRM Platform in Southern Africa thus joins the Indian, Brazilian, German and other DRM national platforms. The aim of these groups is to act as facilitators and intermediaries whilst the standard becomes adopted and implemented in their region.

Detailed trial data will be gathered, analysed and made public towards the end of 2014. The results will be presented to ICASA (the national regulator) with the aim of applying for a full license.

The high quality digital sound of a live medium wave DRM transmission could be clearly heard during the successful launch of the DRM Southern African Platform in Pretoria on 25 June.

The DRM Consortium’s Southern African Platform is a voluntary group without financial goals which aims to coordinate the various industry stakeholders in the countries of Southern Africa who are interested in DRM. The platform intends to stimulate the introduction and roll-out of DRM broadcasts like the one that went on air today and to demonstrate a business case for producing and selling DRM radio sets or auxiliary devices.

Dr Roelf Petersen of Radio Pulpit, the Chairman of the first African DRM Platform, was delighted with the launch illustrating the power of DRM in the heart of South Africa. "With DRM, people in difficult-to-reach areas will in future be able to listen to crystal clear digital radio. As we are trying to put forward a credible strategy and structure, we feel that the Platform can offer excellent broadcasting, information and manufacturing solutions for my country and the whole of Southern Africa," he said.

"It is early days", said DRM Consortium Chairperson Ruxandra Obreja, "But the excellent DRM sound enjoyed by the participants at the launch, the data provided by credible consultants, and the interest shown by other broadcasters, government representatives and manufacturers has made me very optimistic

Washington, D.C., June 10, 2014 -- Just in time for World Cup 2014 in Brazil, Voice of America is introducing a new soccer program and two new blogs to enable its global audiences to better enjoy the world's game.
The new program is called Penalty Box. It features ardent soccer lovers from VOA's language services, diehard fans from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas, all of whom will be rooting for their native teams. With its different hosts and many different perspectives, Penalty Box offers a broad range of analysis and opinions - and plenty of passionate debate. The show is recorded in a small makeshift studio - "It really is a box," says Penalty Box creator Amish Srivastava - and the set is also rather makeshift, being decorated with soccer jerseys, trophies, and other memorabilia donated by VOA staffers. In addition to English, the show is also recorded in Bangla, Pashto/Dari, Portuguese, and Swahili, making it just about as international as the game itself.

Even before the World Cup began, Penalty Box was making quite a splash, with several affiliates picking up the weekly segment, including DESH TV in Bangladesh, and Radio Television Afghanistan (RTA) in Afghanistan. Penalty Box episodes are also available online and on mobile.
