EEUU: Servicio postal podría cerrar cerca de mil oficinas

El servicio ha sido perjudicado por una fuerte caída en el volumen de los envíos a medida que la gente y las compañías usan el correo electrónico cada vez más, tanto para la comunicación personal como para pagar cuentas. Urban areas with more than one postal station or branch may see auxiliary offices consolidated into fewer branches to streamline operations and cut costs, according to Augustine Ruize, the postal spokesman for the Bay Valley district. "We don't put up a for-sale sign and we don't go out of business and we're trying to stay in business," he said. Ruiz said branches scheduled for "consolidation" will be chosen based on proximity to other locations and anticipated savings. They will also take into account consumer service, he said. Although services will still be provided through other branches, some consumers may still be inconvenienced. Andre Jones lives near the Dimond Station in Oakland. "I guess I'd have to go down to the post office at Lakeshore Avenue," she said. "And that's kind of out of my way. So I'd be sad to see this one go." Ruiz said that the post office will decide which branches will close by early October, basing it on what the district manager decides is the best business option. At that point, officials will know the total savings. When the district manager decides which branches will be consolidated, customers and employees will be notified, Ruiz said. Because the process is a consolidation instead of a closure of service, employees will be transferred rather than laid off, he said, adding that employees are already being informed about possible changes. The decision to close branches is part of a nationwide cost-cutting measure, as the anticipated mail volume in 2009 will decrease by 30 billion pieces of mail, according to Ruiz. Other measures include removing collection boxes and adjusting mail routes, he said. Ruiz said that especially in the recession, more people are turning to the Internet, which has hurt business.
