After days of intense deliberation, judges in the inaugural MTN Radio Awards have finally made their choice and South Africa's radio station of the year will be announced at a prestigious functie:on in Johannesburg on Saturday, May 15.
As well as that accolade, the MTN Listener's Choice award will also be made after a well-received call to radio audiences to vote via SMS for the name of their favourite station.

As well as those two awards, a number of other category winners will also be announced on the night including: best breakfast show; best business show; best newsreader and best producer. Special awards include: best station on-air promotion and the young radio achiever of the year.

In addition, 20 inductees to the MTN Radio Hall of Fame will be announced. The list will include veteran sports commentator Charles Fortune and former YFM DJ Fana Khaba who died of HIV AIDS six years ago.

Project Director Jeremy Maggs says: "We're thrilled at the massive response to these awards in year one and this is a clear indication the event will grow in stature and prestige in coming years. The May 15 event will be a major gathering of the country's radio talent, all of whom are committed to growing this powerful medium and nurturing new talent."

In total there are 18 categories that will be recognized. The most popular entries were: best daytime show; best newsreader and best station promotion. There were also a number of entries in the best producer and best music show categories.

After the judging, panel members complimented stations on the high standards of entry, but were disappointed at the low number of community stations that entered.

Notes Maggs: "The community radio sector in this country is vital to the success of the medium and is also a hothouse of emerging talent. While the judges did single out some stations, they would have liked more to listen to. We look forward to working with the sector next year to make sure we have more entries."

All winners will be published in a special awards book "On Air" that will be handed out on the night. The full MTN Radio Hall of Fame will be listed, as well as special articles of interest to the radio community, including a full take out of global trends in the industry and the DNA of a great radio commercial.
