Radio countries across the world – abbreviations
- Radio calendar
- Six broadcast tips
- DX Mix News by Ivo Ivanov

In the international exchange of information the names of countries and other territories are quite common. Some of them consist of only four letters such as Cuba and Laos for instance, however, others are too long to write in full such as Madagascar or consist of several words i.e. Central African Republic. Therefore international organizations have introduced abbreviations for countries in a bid to facilitate printed communication. These symbols (initials) contain from one to three letters plus, some of them, digits. To give you an example, the BG abbreviation is used for Bulgaria for automobiles, mail etc., and LZ for aircraft, radio telegraphy, etc.

The world of radio uses two types of symbols:

- of the organization of the radio telegraphers, the International Amateur Radio Union, where each country, island and territory is designated with a symbol containing letters or letters plus digits. For Bulgaria the symbol is LZ, for Bhutan it is A5 etc.
- of the International Telecommunication Union for broadcasting, i.e. for radio stations airing speech and music the symbol contains one or three Latin letters, for example for Bulgaria and respectively for Radio Bulgaria (and of all state-run or private radio stations in this country) the symbol is BGR .

As soon as the symbols were introduced, one-letter symbols were attached to some countries – they are B for Brazil, D for Germany derived from Deutschland; E from Espana for Spain; F for France; G for Great Britain, I for Italy, J for Japan and S for Sweden. The rest of countries are denoted with three letters. The symbols are given out depending on the way the countries' names are written in English, French or other languages. For example in Arabic the name of Jordan is Urdunia but the ITU code for Jordan is JOR – derived from its English name. Switzerland is a country that uses four languages, but the initials SUI derive from the French name Suisse, most probably because of French-speaking Geneva where the ITU head office is found. Many of the initials suggest the name of the country, i.e. ALB stands for Albania, ARM stands for Armenia etc., but others won't suggest that, such as CLN for Sri Lanka – derived from that country's former name Ceylon. Until recently there was the same case with Myanmar, ex-Burma, denoted with BRM, but ITU has renamed it to MMR. Speaking about the ITU list, the new state of South Sudan has only digits, #211 (in the United Nations list it is #197, in the World Radio and in the TV Handbook it is #252 ) and has no initials so far. Apart from Myanmar other symbols have been recently replaced as follows: ex ATN for Bonaire, the Caribbean Netherlands – now BES; ex BUL now BGR for Bulgaria; ex BRM now MMR for Myanmar and NLD for the Netherlands, ex HOL. The compilers of the lists of initials have had some hard time with the names of countries starting with the Latin letters C, M & S, since the names of more than 20 countries actually start with these letters. The ITU list also includes temporary symbols such as TWN, PSE, XGZ & XWB respectively for Taiwan, the Palestinian Authority, the Gaza Strip & the West Bank .

Radio calendar

Now everything connected with the date September 1: in 1936 the first radio paper in Bulgaria, Radio Universe, was printed in the town of Pleven. In the same year Radio Atlantida was launched from Argentina. On the same date in 1930 was the start of Radio Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia and in 1969 of Radio Mexico International .
