After a feverish competition, the team from the Dhurakijpundit University of Thailand emerged as champions of the 10th ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon).
Thanks to its excellent technique and accuracy, the Dhurakijpundit University team defeated its compatriot squad from Kampaengphet Technical College to win the Robocon Grand Prix.
Nineteen teams from 18 countries and regions competed in the contest which was held today in Bangkok. To reach the finals, the two Thai teams had to eliminate competitors from Indonesia, Vietnam and Japan.
The theme for this ye
ar's competition was inspired by the Thai festival of Loy Kratong. It called for competitors to build robots which could execute precise tasks on a moving surface.
This year's competition was hosted by Thai broadcaster MCOT on behalf of Thailand. ABU Robocon will next be held in Hong Kong.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of ABU Robocon. In 2000, ABU member countries agreed to organise an annual robot contest for college, university and polytechnic students, with the objective of developing knowledge, creativity and innovation among young people in the region.
The first ABU Robocon contest was held in Tokyo in 2002, hosted by Japanese broadcaster NHK.
