KBS World Radio has launched a K-Pop contest, "K-Pop World Star", through its KBS website and YouTube. The open audition event is aimed at further promoting South Korean pop music, which has taken the world by storm.
Contestants can sign up for the content by uploading video clips of themselves singing a K-Pop song at the two websites. The sites are available in 11 major languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, Vietnamese and Korean.
After the preliminary evaluation to pick out 10 challengers, the list will be whittled down to three, who will be mentored. The finalists will be screened by a panel of judges and online voters. A trip to Seoul awaits the K-Pop World Star winner, who will also stand a chance to be part of KBS programmes.

Hit VOA Program "Angola, Fala Só" Expands to Full Hour

0 comentarios

Washington, D.C. — July 29, 2011 —

Voice of America's new Portuguese language call-in show to Angola has become such a hit with audiences, the program is growing from 30-minutes to a full-hour format starting this week.
Angola, Fala , which roughly translates to "Just Say It" in English, went on the air in March, tackling a range of issues, from politics and health to rules on social behavior.
Washington-based host Luis Costa Ribas says the show is being expanded because producers have been getting hundreds of calls by listeners who want to be on the weekly program, which is broadcast on medium wave, shortwave, mobile and streamed on the Internet.
Luis Costa Ribas Ribas says, "The extra thirty minutes will allow time for more listeners to have a voice and express an opinion that can be heard all over Angola. It can also give us more room for follow-up on some hot topics, without taking time away from our audiences."
Callers from anywhere in Angola are welcome to phone in or text-message their questions or comments to the show, which is partly funded by a grant from the U.S. State Department.
The title for the Portuguese language show was inspired by a popular expression, which is often used in the Angolan capital, Luanda.
Visit the Angola, Fala Só webpage (http://www.voanews.com/portuguese/news/angola-fala-so-comeca-sexta-feira.html) for more details about toll free numbers to call with your questions or to listen on-line.

Pacific Pubcasters Seek Foreign Aid
___________________________________

A group of public broadcasters in the South Pacific have joined
forces with a key aim of co-ordinating their requests for foreign aid
reports the Radio Heritage Foundation.

The Pacific Association of Public Service Broadcasters was set up
earlier this month at a meeting in Vanuatu and brings together NBC
Papua New Guinea, SIBC Solomon Islands, TBC Tonga and VBTC Vanuatu.

According to one report, one of their main objectives is to
collaborate on requests to foreign countries and aid agencies for
money to fund digital broadcasting, new equipment, staff training,
infrastructure and much more.

No information was made available on what their current combined
budgets amount to, what commitments their own governments are making
to support their future broadcasting plans from domestic resources
and how much foreign aid money has already been poured into the four
broadcasters in the past two decades.

All four broadcasters are facing increased competition from local
commercial stations and losing market share of local listeners. These
local commercial stations fund themselves by raising capital from
shareholders and selling advertising.

The four partners have started their efforts by signing a Friendship
& Co-operation Agreement, and are now busy drafting the constitution,
regulations and policies of their new organization.

"The challenges faced by the four Pacific pubcasters reflect those of
fellow public service broadcasters in Australia, New Zealand, Canada
and the USA, where tough economic conditions have already frozen or
reduced budgets" says Radio Heritage Foundation chairman, David
Ricquish.

They also face common issues of increased competition from digital
and internet broadcasting platforms and essentially, no longer
operate just within their national borders. Their regulatory
structures no longer offer as much protection from competition as
before.

"Expect their increased requests for foreign aid to be met by a closer
look at their efficiency, their governance and whether or not their
programs and services continue to meet contemporary listener
expectations and needs" adds Mr Ricquish.

If potential Chinese 'soft loans' for these pubcasters will be
accompanied by more than a cursory look at these issues remains to be
seen.

"Whether there remains a role for pubcasters in these relatively small
Pacific economies and if there is, what it might be and how best to
resource it, is one key issue now confronting these PAPSB members"
concludes Mr Ricquish.

The Radio Heritage Foundation says it's good to see them taking a
collective approach to these challenges, and some responsibility for
their own futures.

Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Sen.

"VOA journalists around the world, including those covering developments in Cambodia,
adhere to the highest journalistic standards of accuracy and objectivity, standards mandated
by U.S. law."

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Friday sharply criticized Voice of America and Radio
Free Asia, saying their news reports are "very inferior."

He accused the two broadcasters, both funded by the U.S. government under the
Broadcasting Board of Governors, of distorting information, or containing "zero" information.

The prime minister made the comments in response to a question by a VOA Khmer Service
journalist at a news conference in Cambodia. The question was about the Khmer Rouge
tribunal, and Mr. Hun Sen said it was not among the topics to be covered by the news
conference, which followed a meeting of his cabinet and was chiefly dominated by questions
about Cambodia's border dispute with Thailand.

Mr. Hun Sen praised Radio France International and offered to hire Cambodian staff at VOA
and RFA to work at Cambodian news stations.

VOA responded to the prime minister's comments by saying, "VOA journalists around the
world, including those covering developments in Cambodia, adhere to the highest journalistic
standards of accuracy and objectivity, standards mandated by U.S. law."

The Cambodian government has opposed increasing the number of cases heard by the
Khmer Rouge tribunal, a joint Cambodia and international court that is trying leaders of the
Khmer Rouge, which ruled the country in the late 1970s. More than a million people died
under the Khmer Rouge - many of them starved or worked to death, and others executed.

One person has been convicted by the tribunal and four others are being prosecuted. The
government says adding more cases could be harmful to national stability.

VOA provides news in more than 40 languages via shortwave and FM radio, television,
satellite and the Internet. RFA provides news to Asia.

The Broadcasting Board of Governors also oversees Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, the
Middle East Broadcasting Networks, and the Office of Cuba Broadcasting.Standard rig :

China's Kalaiarasi: Zhu Juan Hua, the director of China Radio International's Tamil station, at a recording of their daily
broadcast. Photo : Ananth Krishnan.

CRI's Tamil programmes, which enjoy a cult following , are set to grow bigger
S. Pandiyarajan was fiddling around with his shortwave radio set one hot summer evening at Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, when he stumbled upon a strange station.
At first listen, it was a language he couldn't identify. It sounded like Tamil, but spoken in an accent he could not recognise. He listened on, straining his ears. To his surprise, he discovered that the voices were coming from faraway China.
"I could hear two Chinese people speaking in perfect Tamil!" he said. "And this was Sentamizh [classical Tamil], which you never hear anywhere, anymore, even in Tamil Nadu."
That evening, Mr. Pandiyarajan became the latest member of China Radio International's fast-growing overseas fan base. The station, run by the Chinese government, has, for more than six decades, been tasked with carrying news from China — from politics to arts and culture — to boost the country's image overseas.
With humble beginnings in the civil war-torn China in the 1940s, CRI today is at the centre of a massive multi-billion dollar effort to boost rising China's "soft power" overseas, sending out daily broadcasts in 63 languages, 24 hours a day, from its expansive multi-storey headquarters in west Beijing.
Remarkably, CRI's Tamil station enjoys the widest reach of all its channels. Its popularity underscores the quiet success China's "soft power" push is having in unlikely locations. The Tamil station, which broadcasts every day from a modest 12th floor office, has more than 25,000 registered listeners — besides thousands of others who tune in casually every day — in Tamil Nadu and the rest of India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, Germany, the United States and Japan.
The Tamil station started broadcasting in 1963. Since then, it has continued to beam its shows uninterrupted, building up an almost cult following overseas, with its fans even organising themselves into a network of listeners' clubs.
Leading the station is Zhu Juan Hua, from Shanghai, who prefers to go by the Tamil name Kalaiarasi. Ms. Zhu has been with CRI Tamil since its launch, among the first group of students in this country who were trained in Tamil.
"When I joined CRI, the situation was far different," said Ms. Zhu. "We had few speakers. Today, we have 15 highly trained Chinese Tamil-speaking staff, and plan to hire six more this year. We have been growing, and growing."
Speaking in fluent Tamil, she says the station receives more than 450,000 letters every year, accounting for 30 per cent of all the letters CRI's more than 60 channels receive.
CRI, along with China Central Television and the Xinhua news agency, is now in the middle of an $8.7-billion "soft power" push to boost Chinese media overseas.
The station is on a drive to purchase prominent slots on local AM and FM channels in many countries. Earlier this year, CRI's Urdu channel launched FM broadcasts in Pakistan. CRI Tamil has also launched FM broadcasts in Sri Lanka, and is now in talks with stations in Tamil Nadu. CRI's Tamil shows are currently broadcast in India, on shortwave, every evening for two hours, starting at 7.30 p.m.
This month, the station invited the heads of some of its listeners' clubs in Tamil Nadu to visit its Beijing headquarters, part of an effort to engage more with listeners.
S. Selvam, head of the All-India Listeners' Club, said the station's popularity was driven by its novelty. "The first thing that strikes you is, why are these Chinese people learning Tamil, and speaking perfect Sentamizh?" he said. "You think, if they are making such an effort, we have to reach out to them."
Mr. Pandiyarajan agreed. "This is something completely new," he said. "We have Villupuram Tamil, Chennai Tamil, Puducherry Tamil. But I never thought I would discover that there would also be a Cheena [Chinese] Tamil."
