Programme schedule for Saturday 7 May 2011 - Friday 12 May 2011
Welcome to our weekly guide to Radio Netherlands Worldwide's English Service - a list of the new programmes coming up on Radio Netherlands Worldwide this coming week, beginning on Saturday.
The list includes first airings of RNW's main features. The programmes are repeated throughout the week. Times are in UTC.

SATURDAY 7 MAY
A way out
We feature stories about one person, maybe a stranger or even an old enemy, helping – and sometimes saving – another person.
A gang member in London turns his life around after a photojournalist takes pictures of him. A Kenyan man finally meets the Swedish benefactor whose help allowed him to graduate from Harvard Law School. A woman in South Africa finds peace after meeting the man who orchestrated his daughter's assassination. And a homeless man rescues a woman drowning herself in the Thames.

SUNDAY 8 MAY
No first airings, repeat programmes only.

MONDAY 9 MAY

The focus is on Africa, with music from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Mauritania. In our Africa Unsigned slot we bring you another young and promising artist: Nina Ogot from Kenya.
Neco Novellas was born in Mozambique but grew up in the Netherlands. Traces of his native country's Chopi culture can be found in his music, complemented with samba, jazz, reggae and funk.
Singer-songwriter Daby Touré grew up in Mali and Mauritania amid the music from local tribes. As a teenager he also listened a lot to pop music on the radio, including Bob Marley, The Police and Stevie Wonder. They inspire him to this day, as does another kind of music: jazz.

Bun Chai, who is paralysed from the neck down, made a public appeal to the Hong Kong government for the right to end his life - and in the process found a way to live.
Hear Bun Chai's story from Radio Television Hong Kong for our Global Perspective series "Who says I can't?"

Mandela the boxer
Nelson Mandela was a fighter - against apartheid, but also in the boxing ring. There are many parallels between his passion for boxing and the struggles to emancipate blacks in South Africa and the US. Mandela did not enjoy the violence, but the science of boxing. Our guest is Eric Brouwer, who wrote a book about Mandela's passion for boxing.
