Community team in appeal for volunteers
Published Date: 09 July 2009
BUTE'S new community radio station, Bute FM, will be officially launched at midday on Wednesday, July 15.
The radio station, Bute's first, will broadcast from studios located on the top floor of 7 Castle Street, in the centre of Rothesay, and will bring a varied mix of programmes to islanders, for islanders and by islanders on a frequency of 96.5FM.
The station will be almost entirely operated by volunteers, making it a 'community' station in every sense of the word. Those volunteers will bring a varied selection of skills and expertise, ranging from presentation to production and technical expertise. At first, locally-broadcast content will take the form of a two-hour breakfast show each weekday morning, though there are plans for a regular discussion show and specialist music programming too.
The station has been set up with assistance from Celtic Music Radio, a community station based at the University of Strathclyde which broadcasts on 1530MW in the Glasgow area and across the world on the internet.
Bute FM is not yet ready to offer a similar web-based facility but station manager Iain Donald told us he hoped this would be ready to launch "in a few months".The station also plans to train people of all ages in all aspects of sound broadcasting, both in front of and behind the microphone.
