Workers in public television and radio stations in Nigeria launched a strike on Wednesday over unpaid wages, union officials said.
The workers, under the aegis of their union, the Radio, Television and Theatre Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU), embarked on the indefinite strike at the expiration of their two-week ultimatum for the government to pay allowances outstanding since 2005.
RATTAWU president Yemisi Bamgbose said that the workers decided to strike, accusing the government of being insensitive to their plight.
"The language we understand now is naira," the nation's currency, Bamgbose said on a local television.
Senate information committee chairman Ayogu Eze said efforts were underway to resolve the crisis, which has started to affect programmes on the strike-hit radio and television stations.
