Argentina will adopt the Japanese standard for high-definition television (HDTV) over its competitors from Europe and the United States, AFP reports.

Argentine President Cristina Kirchner made the announcement that her country would follow Brazil in opting for the Japanese standard in the highly-competitive market at a South American summit in Bariloche yesterday.

She ratified a memorandum between the Argentine and Japanese governments on introducing the Japanese standard ISDB-T and setting out cooperation between the two countries in the sector.

Ms Kirchner also signed a cooperation accord on HDTV with Brazil, which has dubbed its version of the Japanese standard the ISDB-Tb.
