It left DJ's, and listeners alike looking for a new outlet.
"The community voice has definitely been disrupted. People don't know where to go for information," says former WAMO DeeJay "GQ."
The search for that voice is coming to an end.
Businessman Eddie Edwards, former owner of television station TV 22 announced he has purchased WPYT 660 AM, a 1,400 watt station, with a license to broadcast sunrise to sunset.
He's planning to turn it into a news-talk station devoted to the black community.
"Harvey Adams was my hear friend as you well know and was a great friend of this community," Edwards said. "Harvey approached me on his dying bed and asked me to do him a favor and the favor was since nobody's coming in I had to do something."
"It beats having nothing on the air and it gives us a voice back," he added.
The station itself is still a work in progress. It will be located in Forest Hills and will feature some music. Sundays will be strictly religious programming.
Edwards is hiring and is hoping to also buy an FM station.
He says he knows he's facing tough odds to make the station a go because the need is overwhelming.
"We have nothing, nothing to communicate with. We've got an election, a mayoral election coming up - we can't even debate the issues," Edwards said.
The FCC has 90 days to approve the sale of the new station.
