Launched today in London, with a celebratory party featuring live performances from Paloma Faith and Tinchy Stryder, social networking sites Facebook and Twitter joined the Xbox Live family of applications. The features are free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers 18 and over. Also launched today was streaming 1080p video content from Microsoft's Zune HD store and music from Last.fm radio. First reactions are that the video quality is surprisingly good, provided your broadband connection is fast enough. While a streamed version of Fast & Furious looked reasonably sharp on a demonstration 32inch LCD, it was clearly not comparable to the 1080p Blu-ray version of the same title. However the convenience of having hi-def on tap should not be under-estimated.
'We're delivering some truly exciting social entertainment experiences to our members,' said Marc Whitten, general manager of Xbox Live.
'Xbox Live's differentiator has always been our community, and we've already seen a tremendous response to these features in our public preview.'
Once you've streamed 1080p to your Xbox 360 from the Zune store, let us know how good the AV experience was by commenting below.
