THOMSON SUPPLIES SUPER POWER MW TRANSMITTER FOR
NATIONAL SERVICE ENHANCEMENT IN BANGLADESH

Las Vegas (National Association of Broadcasters Convention — Booths
SL106/SL2120) April 12, 2008 — Bangladesh Radio (BETAR) has ordered
1000 kW radio transmitters from Thomson (Euronext Paris: 18453; NYSE:
TMS) to upgrade its existing broadcast network for nationwide
coverage.

As a large percentage of the Bangladesh population is located in rural
areas, AM radio is very often the only way to reach and inform them.
Thomson's low-power medium-wave transmitters have already been
installed by BETAR radio stations across Bangladesh and the new super
power transmitter from Thomson will be used to transmit and relay
national radio programs throughout the country.

"Radio is the cheapest and most versatile medium for reaching out to
the grass root level and is still the most widespread communication
media in Bangladesh," said BETAR (Radio) Chief Engineer Shekh Ruhul
Amin. "The efficiency of the new high power transmitter from Thomson
will greatly increase our network efficiency meaning we will be able
to use it to broadcast to 95% of the country. In addition, thanks to
its energy saving capacities, the new transmitter from Thomson will
help BETAR to reduce electricity consumption"

BETAR, the Bangladesh government owned national radio network has
played a pivotal role towards developing the country's information
networks since its creation in 1938. This year BETAR will go on air
with a powerful new 1000 kW S7HP transmitter from Thomson based in its
Super Power Transmitting Station at Dhamrai. The decision to choose
Thomson's solutions for this strategic medium wave project was based
on the transmitter's high performance, technical compliance and
compatibility with DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) solutions.

"Thomson's 1000 kW S7HP transmitter is the only transmitter in
Bangladesh through which national programs will be transmitted and
relayed by other stations," said Patrick Montliaud, Senior Vice
President of Thomson's Integration and Networks Solutions business
unit, within the Systems division. "This transmitter will be the heart
of Bangladesh BETAR (Radio) and we are proud to be the solution
provider for such an important national project."

About S7HP

The S7HP transmitter line is Thomson's answer to the needs of high
quality analog and DRM LW/MW performance from 300 kW to 1200 kW and
more. Built exclusively on digital processing techniques, S7HP is
equipped with the advanced modulation technology and intrinsic
flexibility needed for the complex modulation schemes of digital
modulation techniques.

The S7HP holds the world's record for output power in DRM mode vs.
analog/PEP capability. The transmitters feature reduced floor space
design combined with full access. Customers esteem the easy, low-cost
installation, operation and maintenance of this transmitter line

MISA-Zimbabwe speaks on shortwave radio stations

http://www.zimbabwejournalists.com/story.php?art_id=6276&cat=1
By MISA

MISA-Zimbabwe has been following with particular interest the seemingly
contentious issue of shortwave radio stations within the context of the
ongoing SADC mediation process.

It is MISA Zimbabwe´s well considered view that broadcasts by shortwave
radio stations is an internationally accepted global phenomenon in terms of
the International Telecommunications Union Treaty and is in tandem with
the realization of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Shortwave radio frequencies have been critical in allowing access to
information for disadvantaged and repressed peoples across the world.
They also played a critical role in the heroic struggles of the people of
southern Africa against colonialism.

In view of Article 19 of the GPA, MISA Zimbabwe finds it most unfortunate
that the three political parties that are now in the inclusive government have
misunderstood the purpose and function of shortwave radio stations.

The fact that these radio stations are transmitting within the legally allocated
frequency bands by the host countries and without any contravention of the
ITU stipulations, takes away the credence of the argument of their illegality.

In addition, there are no laws in Zimbabwe that restrict the broadcast of
shortwave frequencies into our country. In fact, Section 20 of the Consitution
of Zimbabwe guarantees that citizens are free to hold and to receive and
impart ideas and information without interference.

The stipulation in Article 19 of the GPA requesting that foreign governments
desist from hosting/ funding the shortwave radio stations can only be
construed as tantamount to calling for the banning of all shortwave radio
stations across the world.

This would be reflective of disdain on the part of the three political parties for
United Nations Treaties as they relate to both the ITU and the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights.

It is MISA Zimbabwe´s contention that the core issue at hand is not about
shortwave radio stations, which incidentally do not just broadcast into
Zimbabwe alone, but is more of reluctance by certain elements among the
negotiating parties to allow for the proliferation of freedom of expression and
access to information in Zimbabwe.

MISA Zimbabwe therefore strongly recommends that the three signatory
parties to the GPA focus more on the fundamental issue of freedom of
expression and access to information which has been denied the people of
Zimbabwe.

This would entail the immediate licensing of private broadcasters for both
television and radio while at the same time converting the Zimbabwe
Broadcasting Holdings from a state broadcaster into an independent public
service broadcaster.

Once that is achieved, the issue of `outside broadcasts´ would be of minor
concern to Zimbabweans yearning for a liberalised media environment that
allows them access to alternative views, opinions and ideas that shape and
inform their decision making on socio-economic and political issues that
affect their wellbeing.

Mumbai: The countdown for the first-ever community FM radio in the city has begun. Come February 2010, FM 107.8 or Jago Mumbai, will be launched in the western suburb of Bandra and aims to create awareness on civic issues, community development and social inclusion.
The brainchild of local resident Navin Chandra, chairman of the Union Park Residents' Association (UPRA), Chandra feels radio is the strongest tool for communication within the community and claims it took him two-and-a-half years to obtain the necessary permissions. The radio station received the required license by the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) ministry in Delhi last week. The I&B ministry has approved Sea Hill building in Union Park, Khar (W) as the place from where the radio station will broadcast.

"In the case of a radio station, literacy is not an issue. One doesn't need to know how to read or write. Further, it is free for the community," said Chandra.

The radio station's footprint covers a radius of 10 km and will reach Mahim, Dharavi, Bandra, Santa Cruz, Khar, Juhu, Vile Parle and Versova and involve people from all strata of society. "We will tap the slum pockets in these areas and also give them a voice. This can help us to understand their issues better," said Surekha Kotwani, treasurer UPRA.

Among the many issues that the radio station has on its agenda, promoting cleanliness, health and sanitation, environment, waste management, water conservation and electricity are just a few. The radio station will also raise the issue of judicious use of plastics and suggest ways to deal with common lifestyle diseases and other daily concerns of Mumbaikars. "The problem with Mumbai is that we depend on the BMC or the government. Unless citizens do something, nothing will happen. We want to keep reminding them the responsibility to involve the community at large," said Chandra. The station will also provide a platform for local talent and be broadcast in Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati and English. Workshops on how to run a community radio will begin from Friday.

Phoenix, Ariz., Dec 18, 2009 / 02:40 am
(CNA).- A new Catholic radio station launched in Phoenix on Thursday, becoming the 24th station of the Immaculate Heart Radio network in the western United States. The local bishop says it will be a "channel of evangelization."

The new station, broadcast at KIHP 1310-AM, is the result of a five year effort to bring Catholic radio to the Phoenix market, the Phoenix Business Journal reports. The last three letters of its call sign stand for Immaculate Heart Phoenix.

Though the radio station used by KIHP was priced at four or five million dollars five years ago, it was purchased for only one million because the recession caused a lower asking price.

Doug Sherman, president and founder of the Sacramento-based Immaculate Heart Radio, said the purchase was funded by donors, the majority of whom were local.

"This is the first time a Catholic radio station has ever to come to Phoenix," Sherman told the Phoenix Journal. "We know there's a market here. Over 25 percent of the population is identified as Catholics."

Bishop of Phoenix Thomas Olmsted told the Catholic Sun that the station would be a "channel of evangelization" for those with no faith or those who have fallen away from religious practice.

"Wherever stations have opened across our country, stories of conversion have soon followed," he added.

Such stories include babies saved from abortion, Catholics growing deeper in their faith, strengthened families and instances of confirmed atheists bringing their family into the Church.

The station will also help reach the home-bound, those in nursing homes or with limited ability to be active in a parish. Commuters too will benefit, the bishop added.

Programming will include a musical rosary aired at 7:30 a.m. local time and at two other times during the day. The station will rebroadcast EWTN shows such as The World Over and also seven hours of live call-in talk shows.

Jim Dwyer, public information officer for the Diocese of Phoenix, said KIHP will help the diocese broaden its voice in the Phoenix Valley. He said the diocese would also like to work with Immaculate Heart to have some local programming on the station.

"We would like to have a Bishop's Hour for sure," Dwyer explained. "At least once a month from the Bishop."

Sherman explained that local businesses can advertise their products and services by sponsoring programs on the station. This would not be "hard-sell advertising," but more like PBS television, he told the Phoenix Business Journal.

Immaculate Heart employs 22 people to oversee 23 radio stations in California, Nevada, New Mexico and Utah. Sherman said he is not yet sure how many will be employed at the Phoenix station.

Immaculate Heart Radio's first station launched in January 1997 and was only the seventh Catholic station in the country. By contrast, there were about 1,500 Protestant stations at the time.

"For whatever reason, Catholics were asleep at the wheel for the last 30 years, while other people were doing very good things with radio," Sherman said.

There are now about 200 Catholic radio stations in the U.S.

Immaculate Heart Radio and the diocese launched the station at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, followed by a blessing from Bishop Thomas Olmsted and a celebration at Mount Claret Retreat Center.

History of Immaculate Heart Radio

The history of Immaculate Heart Radio has been one of growth by Grace. Our network continues to grow quickly as the Holy Spirit opens more and more doors for us in our ministry.
In the beginning...

KIHM, named for the Immaculate Heart of Mary, began broadcasting in Reno on January 2, 1997. At that time, KIHM was only the seventh full time Catholic radio station in the country, as compared to over 1,600 Protestant stations and 15,000 secular stations. As of today, there are approximately 150 Catholic stations nationwide.
Network of Stations

Since the founding of KIHM the Immaculate Heart Radio network has grown to consist of 23 of the nation's 150 Catholic radio stations. In 1999, IHR started a second station, KSMH, named for the Sacrament Most Holy, the origin of the name of the city of Sacramento, in Sacramento, California. The exact location of the broadcasting tower was initially in Auburn, but it was moved to Sacramento resulting in important improvements in the quality of the reception as well as a significant increase in KSMH's potential audience.

Later in 1999, KWG was started in Stockton, California. This became our third station.

We soon added two other stations to our network:
KJOP (Lemoore, CA - 2000)
KHOT (Madera, CA - 2001)
With these additions, our broadcasts cover the greater Fresno market.

A third station, KWG, was started in Stockton, California, later in 1999. In August of 2000, a fourth station began broadcasting on KJOP in Lemoore, California. In December of 2001, KHOT in Madera, California, became our fifth station, KJOP and KHOT cover the southern and northern parts of the greater Fresno market on AM 1240 and AM 1250, respectively. In November of 2003, KMAP (later renamed KJPG) began broadcasting Catholic Radio in Bakersfield, CA and became the sixth station in the Immaculate Heart Radio Network.

With Immaculate Heart Radio expanding to the Bay Area, New Mexico, Utah, and Arizona, our ministry doesn't show any signs of slowing.

Immaculate Heart Radio's administrative office is in Loomis, California. This office also serves as Immaculate Heart Radio's main studio where programming and production work is done for each of the stations.
Future Plans for Immaculate Heart Radio

Immaculate Heart Radio's stations are operated on very low budgets, and they are listener supported. We also receive donations from Catholics around the country. Local businesses sponsor an hour of programming in return for a sponsorship spot on the air.
