The Netherlands: A year-end extra Euro Hit 40 show of 2009 with chart from Radio Netherlands Worldwide

The two-hour show with Europe's biggest hits of 2009. We play all tracks (either in full or in part) is here... that is, on this page at RNW. Here they are... The winners of our Facebook Best Pop Decade competition. The winning decade is the 1990s, with the 1970s and 1980s joint second, and the 1960s in 3rd place. No votes for the 1950s or 2000s. This is the winning entry from Alan Beebe of the UK: "Right then: I suspect I ought to have found this a bit more difficult than I did - but since I missed out on pretty much everything before the mid-80s due to my pesky childhood, there's only one decade that captured my musical heart. But first, a couple of honourable mentions: firstly, to the '60s, mainly for an explosion of great music - fun and catchy - and keeping the standard high... however, the '60s would be my dad's choice, so I can't vote for the '60s just as a matter of principle; the second commendation goes to the '80s, mainly because EVERYONE loves the '80s - and you can't help but dance to '80s music, even if you think it's too cheesy. But come on, it's kinda scary when you think back to days of shell-suits and neon socks. And so, to my winner and choice for best pop decade of all time. I'd like to think I chose this era for rational reasons, like the golden age of R.E.M., or the Oasis/Blur spats, or for 'Two Princes' by the Spin Doctors and 'Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm' by the Crash Test Dummies; or for psycho-emotional reasons, like it being the formative years of my musical-taste, or the progression of American Grunge into Brit-Pop and Alternative/Indie, or because I remember a bunch of my University friends dancing to Whigfield's 'Saturday Night' in one of the smallest corridors known to man; in truth, it's all of these and more - because, for me, this decade opened up music throughout the continent (and talking of Whigfield: boy, didn't the continent take dance music to heart?) with people like Ray Cokes on MTV Europe as, at the same time, the world became a little bit smaller. And, maybe, a little bit closer. Without further ado, then, I give to you my nomination for Best Pop Decade of All-Time... Ever! Ladies and Gentlemen, give it up, celebrate good times, come on! Show your appreciation for THE NINETEEN-NINETIES!" Here we go... Yes, this is just a short email... no other competition winners to announce or any such things. All we in fact want to do now is grab our brooms and shovels and dig our way out of Radio Netherlands Worldwide's radio-studio-shack in the forest so we can get to the railway station through all this snow (about 20 centimetres it looks like!).
