Nepal Television (NTV), the Himalayan country's national broadcaster, has begun celebrating its 25th anniversary, which falls on Sunday.

The anniversary events began today with a procession through the capital, Kathmandu, featuring traditional culture and music as well as elephant rides.

NTV is also publishing a souvenir book with articles on various aspects of broadcasting, and President Ram Baran Yadav will unveil a monument at its premises on Sunday.

The broadcaster, which operates two channels, is also airing special programmes on media-related issues to mark the anniversary.

Launched in 1985, NTV now has about 400 employees and reaches 70 percent of the country's population. It has 18 relay transmission centres and, since 2001, has been broadcasting by satellite to about 40 countries.

NTV was for many years the only television station in Nepal but several private channels have begun operating in recent years.

Its second channel, NTV-2, was launched in September 2003 and focuses on entertainment, particularly for young viewers.
