The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks are changing the dial.
By: Heath Hotzler, INFORUM

The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks are changing the dial.

The defending Northern League champion RedHawks announced Tuesday that they signed a three-year radio contract with Radio Fargo Moorhead to broadcast regular-season and playoff games on KVOX-AM (740).

The minor league baseball club spent the previous nine years on WDAY-AM (970).

"We will be in the forefront of their hearts and minds and won't be an afterthought," RedHawks Chief Executive Officer Brad Thom said. "It's fun to be the flagship, where there is a station that revolves around us, so to speak."

While on WDAY-AM 970, Thom said the RedHawks ran into conflicts with North Dakota State athletics, the station's other big broadcast partner.

The contract with Radio Fargo Moorhead has fewer conflicts, and the ability to reach a bigger market, Thom said.

A broadcast team will be announced in the next month. Scott Miller has been the radio voice of the team since 2005.

Thom said he would like to see a two-man booth, with the home color commentator handling the call alone for all away games.

However, Thom did not rule out hiring one person to handle both home and away duties.

Former Los Angeles Dodger great Maury Wills will continue to provide color commentary for selected home games during the season.

The contract with Radio Fargo Moorhead includes an option for three more years when the current deal runs out after the 2012 season.

"It was just the best deal," Thom said.
