The 2010 FOC Marathon
Prospects for band conditions during the next weekend are looking more or less positive; signs of the new sunspot cycle, at long last, appearing. But whatever the propagation of the day, we can all look forward to a great weekend of operating. The annual First Class CW Operators Club, FOC, Marathon will take place from 21.00 UTC Friday, February 5 to 21.00 UTC Sunday, February 7, 2010.
The FOC Marathon is a closed CW event; only FOC members may participate. Nevertheless, all HF bands, except the WARC ones, will be too busy demonstrating high operating skills and ethics. If you are not an FOC member, just listen to the Marathon to enjoy it.
102-Year-Old Woman Tunes Back in to Ham
"The crackle emanating from the little black box transported Ethel Williamson back in time a few decades and whisked her her halfway around the world at the same time. The former lighthouse keeper, who will turn 103 in March, clapped her hands in delight as the voice of a stranger in Melbourne, Australia, broke the static on the little ham radio that sits by the window of her room in
a St. Catharines, Canada long-term-care home" writes Wellland Tribune, Ontario, Canada.
"Can you imagine what it is" she said, shortly after chatting to the man through the radio's hand-held microphone. "To be able to talk to Australia – it's a miracle, it really is."
It had been at least 20 years since Williamson had spoken to anyone via radio, but the Welland branch of the Handy Ham Amateur Radio Club of Canada set up a radio for her at Niagara Ina Grafton Gage Village so she could get back on the airwaves.
Williamson learned Morse code and earned her radio operator's license nearly 60 years ago, taking the call sign she still has today – VE3DTW.

A historic day in the history of the American Radio Relay League. This as the Board of Directors elects First Vice President Kay Craigie, N3KN, of Blacksburg, Virginia, as the organization's first ever female president.

"Of course, we'd like to have more younger people involved in amateur radio. Amateur radio is a fellowship based on achievement. Everything else is jus a demographic factoid, really." she said.
