Voice of America, BBC and Deutsche Welle condemn new wave of Iranian jamming
LONDON
Voice of America, the BBC, and Deutsche Welle have condemned what they say is a new wave of illegal Iranian jamming targeting their shared satellite.
The international broadcasters said in a joint statement Friday that Iranian authorities were violating international law and called on satellite operators to pressure Tehran to stop.
The BBC has repeatedly accused Iran of jamming broadcasts of its Persian television station amid the country's post-election turmoil. The BBC now says Iran has begun jamming its English-language World News as well.
Other channels affected include the Voice of America's Farsi-language television service, the Radio Farda service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Deutsche Welle's television and radio services.

The Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC), the state-run radio service of Pakistan, initiates South Asian Broadcast Service to air programmes in three languages.
The News, Pakistan's leading English newspaper, has reported that an inaugural ceremony was held in the capital of Pakistan, Islamabad, to mark the beginning of this new service by PBC. The programmes would be aired in Nepali, Sanhali and Tamil for the South Asian Broadcast Service.
At the inauguration ceremony, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Pakistan Nawabzada Malik Ammad Khan remarked that the commencement of such a service by the nation marks a major milestone for the promotion of relations with neighbouring countries.
Emphasising the role played by the media in building cordial relation with the neighbouring nations, the Minister also mentioned that Pakistan's foreign policy focuses on strengthening relations with South Asian countries and Radio Pakistan has been playing a significant role in this regard. "Media should play its due role in the country's image building abroad to counter the menace of terrorism and extremism, and establish peace," he added.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General Radio Pakistan Murtaza Solangi commented that it was PBC's effort to reach out to the neighbours of Pakistanï¿?in the dissemination of information, focusing on the message of peace and cooperation.

The Radio Broadcasting, Radio Communication, and Television Concern (KRRT) has begun test digital broadcasting in nine cities.
Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Mykola Honchar, who is also the chairman of the State Communications Administration, announced this during presentation of digital television and radio broadcasting.
"Beginning from today, the populations of those cities that I named and the city of Kyiv can receive ... signals free of charge," he said.
According to him, test digital broadcasting has begun in Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhia, Simferopol, Mykolaiv, Ternopil, and Uzhhorod.
Honchar stressed that the preparation for the beginning of the test broadcasts in these cities lasted four months and that the installation work lasted two months.
According to him, about 30% of the population of Ukraine will be able to receive digital signals following the beginning of test broadcasts in these cities.
First Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Turchynov said that the populations of 12 regions were able to receive digital signals as of today.
Turchynov stressed that digital broadcasting was very important and promising step that would also enable the population to gain access to broadband Internet in the future.
As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council has accused the Transport and Communications Ministry (which controls the KRRT) is violating the law in connection with an attempt by the KRRT to begin digital broadcasting without a license.
According to Ihor Kurus, a member of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council, the KRRT has no legal grounds to broadcast digital signals because it has not obtained the relevant license from the council.
On February 2, the Inter-Agency Council for Coordinating Introduction of Digital Radio and Television Broadcasting approved the State Communications Administration's proposal to begin test operation of digital radio and television broadcasting networks in nine cities.
The Radio Broadcasting, Radio Communication, and Television Concern announced in late December 2009 that it intended to launch digital television broadcasting services in nine cities (Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhia, Simferopol, Mykolaiv, Ternopil, and Uzhhorod) in 2010.

The Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) shortwave transmitters that carry the Radio 1 and 2 signals in the short wave band have developed a technical fault.
ZNBC Public Relations Manager Miriam Mtonga disclosed the development in a statement to ZANIS in Lusaka yesterday.
Ms. Mtonga said the situation means that listeners in remote areas will not be able to access the service.
Ms. Mtonga said the technical fault requires importation of spare parts which has since been instituted by the national broadcaster.
She has, however, said ZNBC is doing everything possible to normalize the situation.
