The Radio Broadcasting, Radio Communication, and Television Concern (KRRT) has begun test digital broadcasting in nine cities.

Deputy Transport and Communications Minister Mykola Honchar, who is also the chairman of the State Communications Administration, announced this during presentation of digital television and radio broadcasting.

"Beginning from today, the populations of those cities that I named and the city of Kyiv can receive ... signals free of charge," he said.

According to him, test digital broadcasting has begun in Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhia, Simferopol, Mykolaiv, Ternopil, and Uzhhorod.

Honchar stressed that the preparation for the beginning of the test broadcasts in these cities lasted four months and that the installation work lasted two months.

According to him, about 30% of the population of Ukraine will be able to receive digital signals following the beginning of test broadcasts in these cities.

First Deputy Prime Minister Oleksandr Turchynov said that the populations of 12 regions were able to receive digital signals as of today.

Turchynov stressed that digital broadcasting was very important and promising step that would also enable the population to gain access to broadband Internet in the future.

As Ukrainian News earlier reported, the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council has accused the Transport and Communications Ministry (which controls the KRRT) is violating the law in connection with an attempt by the KRRT to begin digital broadcasting without a license.

According to Ihor Kurus, a member of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council, the KRRT has no legal grounds to broadcast digital signals because it has not obtained the relevant license from the council.

On February 2, the Inter-Agency Council for Coordinating Introduction of Digital Radio and Television Broadcasting approved the State Communications Administration's proposal to begin test operation of digital radio and television broadcasting networks in nine cities.

The Radio Broadcasting, Radio Communication, and Television Concern announced in late December 2009 that it intended to launch digital television broadcasting services in nine cities (Dnipropetrovsk, Lviv, Chernihiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhia, Simferopol, Mykolaiv, Ternopil, and Uzhhorod) in 2010.
