In this issue by DX Editor Dimiter Petrov, LZ1AF, with Broadcast Tips by Rumen Pankov:

Chile Earthquake Emergency Frequencies:

Following the 8.8 earthquake that stuck southern Chile early Saturday, February 27, IARU Region 2 and the Red Chilena Nor Austral de Servicio (RECNA) suggests radio amateurs monitor EmComm frequencies for earthquake and tsunami information:

SSB frequencies:

10 meters - 28,300 and 28,500 kHz

15 meters - 21,200 and 21,350 kHz

20 meters - 14,200 and 14,350 kHz

40 meters - 7,050 and 7,095 kHz

80 meters - 3,738 and 3,750 kHz

In addition, the worldwide emergency communication "center of activity" frequencies should be monitored. They are: 14,300, 18,160 and 21,360 kHz.

Chile Earthquake – Update

The following information has been received from Jorge Sierra, LU1AS, the IARU Region 2 Emergency Co-Ordinator for Area G:

At this time there are several frequencies in the 40 meter band receiving traffic for local people in Chile from stations in both Chile and Argentina. The most active frequencies are 7050, 7060, 7088, 7095 kHz along with others.

Almost all the traffic heard is related to locating missing persons, but it is not easy to find them, because the situation in the small towns near Santiago is very difficult, they don' have electricity, telephone lines or cell phones; emergency communications are running on batteries.

As can be seen in broadcast news reports, the airport at Santiago is again operative but with some restrictions. The Chilean government has asked other countries in the region not send help until they can review the situation and ask for their exact needs.

Rescue Radio: Ham Hero VU2RBI to Meet with UK Royal Family

One of the worlds most decorated hams has been invited to meet with the British Royal Family.

VU2RBI, Bharathi Devulapalli Prasad announced on her Facebook page, February 22 that she has been invited to speak at the Commonwealth Day Observance in London on March 8th in the presence of HM The Queen, HRH Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duchess of Cornwall and all Commonwealth High Commissioners. She says she will be talking to the distinguished group about science technology and society, which she says will include her personal experiences on ham radio.

Bharati, one of ham radio's most prominent YLs, has won several significant international awards related to her service to society by using amateur radio. She was part of the Andaman DXpedition team that won the ARRL's 2005 International Humanitarian Award. The December 2004 earthquake and resulting tsunami that devastated South Asia coastal areas swiftly switched the role of the DX operation into an emergency communication link with India's mainland.

VU2RBI is active on HF CW and SSB from her shack in New Delhi. Her husband and two children are also licensed radio amateurs as well. (Credited to W7VOA)

The First DXpedition to Kurdistan, YI9PSE

A group of amateurs from the USA, Japan, Hawaii, Iraq and Martinique are planning a big DXpedition to Kurdistan, Northern Iraq, the first ever to take place in the spring, most likely April 10 -12. Five stations will be used at the same time in different bands and modes – CW, SSB and RTTY with five Bulgarian-made ACOM 1010 amplifiers and a good set of high-gain antennas!
