Deutsche Welle begins second test phase for radio in Bangladesh

Following the beginning of test transmissions on Bangladesh Betar's FM
network last month, Deutsche Welle will now start testing radio
transmissions in three additional cities on May 1.  DW-RADIO will be
broadcasting daily on 102.0 MHz in Khulna, 105.0 MHz in Rajshahi and
105.4 MHz in Rangpur from 8:00 am and 8:30 am as well as 8:00 pm and
8:30 pm BST.

Since April 14, FM test transmissions have started on 97.6 MHz in
Dhaka, 105.4 MHz in Chittagong and 105.0 MHz in Sylhet at the same
time.

This is the second part of the planned test roll-out, which comprises
six major cities in Bangladesh. Deutsche Welle is planning several
accompanying marketing campaigns, including a road show that will take
place later this year.

The agreement between Deutsche Welle and Bangladesh Betar was signed
into effect on March 9 in Bangladesh. It marks just another milestone
in the relationship between Deutsche Welle and Bangladesh Betar and it
is something that will help Germany's international broadcaster to
expand its Bengali radio services in Bangladesh via FM.
Radio in Bangladesh is a very important form of media and it reaches a
large percentage of the 153 million people daily. International
broadcasters can only be active in this market with cooperation from
the national public broadcaster Bangladesh Betar, which was founded in
1971.

ITU Award goes to Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Tun Abdul Razak,
China Mobile CEO Wang Jianzhou and Internet pioneer Robert Kahn

World Telecommunication and Information Society Award will be presented at
World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China on 17 May

Geneva, 23 April 2010 - ITU marks the 145th anniversary of its establishment on 17 May this year by recognizing three eminent personalities who have contributed to the ongoing digital revolution. Malaysian Premier Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak; Chairman and CEO of China Mobile Mr Wang Jianzhou; and Mr Robert Kahn, one of the early pioneers of the Internet, were awarded the 2010 ITU World Telecommunication and Information Society Award in recognition of their dedication to promoting ICTs as a means of providing a better life for humanity.
The Awards were announced on the closing day of the annual session of ITU's Council.
Making the announcement, ITU Secretary-General Hamadoun Touré welcomed the three eminent laureates who have contributed to connecting the world through the Internet and the mobile phone and in making cyberspace a safer place for users everywhere. "ICTs have been instrumental in paving the way for a better future, increasingly dictating lifestyles and behaviour patterns, contributing to the growth of trade and commerce, improving governance and municipal services, and revolutionizing entertainment through the development of rapid communications," Dr Touré said. "On the 145th anniversary of ITU, it is my pleasure to honour those who have made this possible through their foresight and commitment to harness the potential of ICTs to make the world a better place."
World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) marks the establishment of ITU on 17 May, 1865. It brings attention to the potential of information and communication technologies (ICT) in meeting the development and economic aspirations of societies and on the importance of the Internet as a global resource. This year's theme for WTISD, "Better City, Better Life with ICT", is in keeping with the overarching theme — Better City, Better Life — of the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai, China where the global ceremony commemorating the occasion will be held on 17 May.
ITU World Telecommunication and Information Society Awards

Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak has made connectivity one of his priorities. As part of the New Economic Model for Malaysia, he has placed a high priority on strengthening ICT infrastructure. His administration has supported the work of ITU in strengthening global cybersecurity through the IMPACT Centre in Cyberjaya near Kuala Lumpur.
Mr Wang Jianzhou is Executive Director, Chairman and CEO of China Mobile, which operates the world's largest mobile network with over 500 million subscribers. The China Mobile network covers all major cities in China as well as outlying and remote rural areas.
Mr Robert Kahn, President and CEO of the Corporation for National Research Initiatives (CNRI), played a key pioneering role in the development of the Internet. He laid the foundations of the TCP/IP protocol architecture, which is a standard operating feature of the Internet. CNRI is a non-profit organization that focuses on the strategic development of network-based information technologies and Kahn has continued to nurture the evolution of the Internet, steering the development of new standards.

Venezuela leader Hugo Chavez takes to Twitter

Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan president well known for his marathon TV addresses to the nation, has taken to Twitter to share his thoughts.
After he promised to "let loose" on Tuesday night, a Spanish-language tweet duly appeared on his new chavezcandanga account 14 minutes after midnight.
It was a simple message to say he was off on a working trip to Brazil.
By morning the leftist leader, a divisive figure at home and abroad, had nearly 29,000 followers on Twitter.
With his popularity dented by a recession and soaring inflation, the Venezuelan leader has often been outmanoeuvered by opponents more active on the web than his supporters, correspondents say.

Hey how's it going? I appeared like I said I would: at midnight. I'm off to Brazil. And very happy to work for Venezuela. We will be victorious!!
Hugo Chavez's first official tweet

Seven hours of Hugo Chavez
A close aide, Public Works Minister Diosdado Cabello, announced on Monday that Chavez supporters planned to "storm" social networking sites.
"The opposition thinks it owns the social networking sites - they think Twitter and Facebook belong to them," he said.
"We're fighting and there are seven million of us who will have Twitter," he declared, referring to the membership claimed by Mr Chavez's United Socialist Party.
Mr Cabello promised that the presidential Twitter feed would carry messages "from our commander".

Mr Chavez's TV speeches are also available online
Twitter has seen an explosive rise in usage in Venezuela to more than 200,000 active accounts, Reuters news agency reports.
With growth of more than 1,000% in 2009, Venezuela now has one of the highest rates per capita of users of Twitter in Latin America, Reuters adds.
Messages on the site are limited to 140 characters or fewer.
Delivering his weekly TV show Alo Presidente, Mr Chavez once went on air for eight hours and 15 minutes without a break.

Millions of North Koreans listen to dozens of foreign radio broadcasts transmitted by Japan, South Korea and the U.S., and the number is growing.
This is according to Peter Beck, a nonresident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, who said that it is quite a phenomenon given that Pyongyang authorities distribute only radios with fixed dials, block foreign broadcasts, and imprison citizens caught listening to foreign radio for as long as 10 years.

Beck, who is also a Pantech research fellow at Stanford University's Asia Pacific Research Center, said that two of the most popular stations are Voice of America which broadcasts news from the U.S. and around the world, and Radio Free Asia which focuses on the communist regime and the lives of defectors in the South.

Beck added that the North Korean regime is losing its monopoly on the control of information and outside broadcasts are undermining loyalty to the leadership.
