The 2010 Mandarin/Taiwanese Speech Contest for Foreigners will be held in May in Taipei. This is the fifth year in a row that Radio Taiwan International (RTI) has held this contest for non-native speakers of Mandarin/Taiwanese living in Taiwan.

To raise public awareness of global warming, this year's topic is "Save the Earth." Participants will have three minutes to talk about their efforts to reduce carbon footprints and show they lead an environmentally-friendly lifestyle.

The winner of the top prize will receive $NT$30,000 and a free night's stay at a five star hotel in Taipei. All participants will receive a voucher for afternoon tea at The Grand Hotel after the preliminary round.

Participation in the speech contest not only improves one's Chinese/Taiwanese ability, it might lead to job opportunities, as previous experience has shown.

Speeches of participants who make it to the final round will be posted on the RTI website and web users will have a chance to cast a vote for their favorites.

Co-sponsored by the Tourism and Travel Bureau of Taipei County, the speech contest is supported by ICRT, tealit.com, and Taiwan News. For the application form and contest rules, visit Radio Taiwan International at www.rti.org.tw .
