In this issue by DX Editor Dimiter Petrov, LZ1AF, with Broadcast Tips by Rumen Pankov:
N5E – Jarvis Island DXpedition
Rich, KE3Q gave a good report in the 'Daily DX' on the comments by Eric, K3NA at the Dayton DX Forum concerning this DXpedition scheduled for late November this year, dependent upon weather and sea conditions. The DXCC callsign prefix KH5 for Palmyra & Jarvis is ranked #20 in the 2009 Most Wanted Survey results from The DX Magazine.
The group organizing this DXpedition is Radio Expeditions, Inc., the same one that brought us VP6DX… remember that one? A great operation!
This group will have up to 25 operators, with 12 stations on 160-6 meters with CW, SSB and RTTY. No 60 meter operation is planned.
A new "web-based gateway" is being created to be used between DXers and DXpeditioners. The organizers are now awaiting approval of the re`uired permits from the U.S. Fish Wildlife Service.
DX0DX, Spratly Island DXpedition
Sponsored by the South Pacific Contest Club, a major operation from Spratly Island is planned for January 2011. A very large number of international operators are shown on the web site at: www.dx0dx.net . This seems to be a long time in the future, but there are times when it is necessary to make these announcements far in advance in order to generate the sponsors and financial support necessary. Please go to the web site and see for yourself what is planned. (Credited to QRZ DX).
The 6 meter Band is Hot
Wes, AC5K, has released the following: "Just a reminder – you might be missing out on another fun CW band. This time of the year, just as the HF bands are going into their summer sag, the six meter band is nearing its seasonal peak! As the number of DXCC "entities" on HF dry up, there are plenty of Grid Squares and DX entities to chase on six. Most of the continental US had a great opening to OA4TT, Peru, on 10 May. Check the DX clusters for six meter openings or better yet, use the spot map where you can actually see where the sporadic E clouds are. It is a fantastic tool for VHF & UHF operating. The map is available on the www.vhfdx.info website. A good CW frequency is 50098 kHz.
When six is open, you will make contacts with very modest antennas. It does take patience, because when the band is dead (like right now in the US) it is VERY dead! Give six a try, it is a blast. I will be doing some portable operating this summer in semi-rare grid EL39, so be sure to listen for AC5K/p.
More about 6 meters
The keen Bulgarian DXer Dan, LZ1VVV in Sofia is reporting a lot of contacts on SSB across Europe and in the past few days with A92IO, Bahrain, HZ1HZ, Saudi Arabia, KP4EIT, Puerto Rico and TU5KG, Ivory Coast!
