India: Frisky Radio celebrates India

Frisky Radio, a decade-old independent online electronica dance music radio station online, with more than 90 shows and audience from over 140 countries, has dedicated a show to celebrate electronic music from India. Called friskyRadio loves India, the show will showcase original electronic music from 12 Indian DJs, to listeners across the world.

The show was made possible through a collaboration between friskyRadio, DJ Arjun Vagale (Jalebee Cartel) and Submerge India. Vagale already has a show on the radio station called Deep Fried Jalebee, while Submerge India has, over the past few years, successfully pushed electronic music in India through various events, including the Sunburn Festival in Goa.

Great opportunity
Rushabh Seth, or DJ Shubs, one of the 12 DJs whose music will be showcased on the show says, "There are other radio stations too but guys at friskyRadio are not b**s**t. They fine comb everything to ensure that only quality music is aired. Having my mix aired here is such a rush because more than 3000 listeners worldwide will be connected to me via my music."

DJ Praveen Acharya shares Seth's enthusiasm, "Whenever I tune into frisky, I have no doubt that I'll be listening to good electronic music. Frisky is the best that can happen to India in this space."

The founder of friskyRadio, Faisal Sultan, says it was a no-brainer to have a show featuring music from India. Says Sultan, "Electronic music has exploded in India. I remember, when I started friskyRadio in 2001, the dance and electronic music scene was almost non-existent in the subcontinent and the Middle East. Now the world's top DJs regularly tour places like Bangalore, Mumbai, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.I see this as a great thing and can only make our small scene larger and more "legit" amongst other more popular music genres."

Sultan reveals that India ranks among the top 50 countries in terms of listeners to electronic music on the internet, and feels that technology has helped in contributing to the scene. He says, "Production machines that used to cost thousands of dollars now cost a fraction, making it accessible to the average person to create music and get into Djing.

"Earlier, you needed sponsorship to get your name out, now you can do the same, and even more by getting your name out by social networking," he continues. "There's a direct relationship between the fan and the DJ. So an Indian DJ can probably feature amongst the top 10 soon!"

Sultan, who already believes that Goa is one of the top party destinations in the world, now hopes that "it be awesome for India to have its own version of the Burning Man festival on the sands of Rajasthan!"
