Hoang Minh Nguyet: vice general director of Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV): New feature in this year's festival is to include mixed programmes into the competition.

VOV held a press briefing at the National Broadcasting Centre at 58 Quan Su in Hanoi on June 2 to announce the ninth Radio Broadcasting Festival.

The annual festival aims to honour outstanding pieces of work and editors and reporters from all over the country. It will provide an excellent opportunity for them to share their experiences and discuss modern information communications technology.

The entry will feature the country's renewal process in the fields of socio-economics, national security, national and external relation policies and integration trends.

The contestants include reporters and editors from VOV and other provinces and local radio stations. Each station can send maximum of 5 entries which have been broadcast on VOV or other radio stations from May 1, 2009 to April 30, 2010.

The organising board will present 5 gold prizes worth VND10 million each, 20 silver worth VND6 million each, 40 bronze worth VND3 million and 60 consolation prizes worth VND1 million each.

The festival will take place from June 8-10 in Hanoi.

The organising board has so far received 252 pieces of work from 63 radio and television stations.

Ms Nguyet talked about the new features in this year's festival.

Reporter: Can you tell us about new features in this year's festival?

Ms Nguyet: This is the first time we have listed mixed radio programmes in the competition, instead of just radio programmes at grassroots level. Many stations produce reports, interviews, narratives and live radio broadcasts.

The qualifying rounds were conducted in three venues – the Long An Radio and Television Station, the Phu Yen Radio Station and the Vinh Phuc Radio and Television Station.

In addition to the main prizes, the organising board has worked with other organisations to present secondary-prizes, such as the Electricity of Vietnam, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the National Traffic Safety Committee and the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour.

Reporter: What do you think about the quality of the entries for the qualifying rounds?

Ms Nguyet: Generally speaking, the quality of the five genres is almost the same. Many entries covering fields of socio-economics, politics, culture, national security, and national and external relations policies were made merticulously, showing that the producers have made a lot of effort through their fact-finding tours to analyse the situation and propose a number of solutions. I think that the press, especially radio, has actively contributed to dealing with burning issues of public concern, such as land use and the environment.

Reporter: How to promote professional skills at the festival?

Ms Nguyet: To evaluate the quality of work we must examine the content. The producers should reflect issues of public concern and put forward suitable solutions. They should include all the special features of radio broadcasting, for example sound, music, background noise and especially live broadcasts. We asked them to make live programmes and broadcast them from local radio stations and VOV.

Reporter: Thank you very much
