The Broadcasting Authority today approved applications from Asia Television (ATV) and Television Broadcasts (TVB) to extend the coverage of their digital terrestrial services to 89% of the population by year'send.

They have extended their coverage progressively since the completion of six main transmission stations and six fill-in stations at the end of last year. They plan to further extend the coverage by adding eight more fill-in stations by year's end.

The Broadcasting Ordinance requires ATV and TVB ensure their services can be received throughout Hong Kong to the authority's satisfaction, which can also exempt licensees from providing coverage to certain areas.

After considering the stations' plans and the advice of the Office of the Telecommunications Authority, the authority has decided to extend the exemption for citywide coverage until June 30, subject to the condition the licensees' digital terrestrial services cover at least 89% of the population by year's end.

The two companies are required to submit auditors' certificates to certify the progress of their coverage rollout plans. The Broadcasting Authority will monitor the implementation of the coverage plans in consultation with the Office of the Telecommunications Authority.

The Broadcasting Authority has also approved the application of Broadband Network Systems for a licence to provide hotel television programmes in Hong Kong for 12 years. There are now 25 licensees providing services to more than 80 Hong Kong hotels.
