More than 40 percent of viewers who contacted NHK oppose its decision not to provide live TV or radio coverage of the upcoming Nagoya sumo tournament due to the gambling scandal involving sumo wrestlers and elders, while 20 percent agree with the decision, the public broadcaster said Wednesday.

NHK received 1,500 calls and e-mails between 4:30 p.m. Tuesday--when it announced it would end decades of live tournament broadcasts by not showing the July 11-25 tournament--and noon Wednesday, the broadcaster said.

About 640 viewers, or more than 40 percent, said NHK should broadcast the tournament live, while about 310, or 20 percent, said NHK should not.

Other opinions included criticism of the JSA and sumo wrestlers over the scandal, and inquiries about tournament coverage, NHK said.
