The Turkish Radio and Television Corporation, or TRT, has denied claims that it banned the Armenian version of the old Turkish song "Buruk Acı" (Full of Grief) from the airwaves.
"TRT is an enlightened and liberal corporation. Banning a song from being broadcast just because it is [in] Armenian is out of the question," the state broadcasting company said in a written press statement issued Monday. "It is also unreasonable for a corporation that has an Armenian radio station to ban an Armenian song."
The reason TRT decided not to broadcast the song in Armenian was because it lacked the proper documentation, the press statement added. News sources had previously claimed Monday that the song had been banned without any reason.
According to the TRT statement, two notary-certified translations of a popular song's lyrics are required before broadcast if they are in a language other than Turkish. It said Alex Tataryan's album "İz," which contains the Armenian version of "Buruk Acı," was sent to TRT on June 29 and the other nine songs on the album were evaluated as suitable for broadcasting.
