This is Radio Bulgaria's weekly DX Program for radio amateurs and short wave fans which is included in our one-hour broadcasts starting as follows: Friday at 21.00 UTC on 5900 and 7400 kHz beamed to 
West Europe, at 23.00 UTC and Saturday at 02.00 UTC on 9700 and 11700 kHz to North America, as 
well as in the half-hour broadcast at 06.30 UTC on 9600 and 11600 kHz to West Europe.

Propagation Conditions
 

Propagation expert K7RA reports: Average daily sunspot numbers for August 26 to September 1 rose over 17 points to 25.4, when compared to the previous 7-day period. Geomagnetic indicators began the week showing unsettled conditions, but they calmed down to quiet levels again. 

Now that August is over, we can look at average sunspot numbers for the previous few months. The 3-month trailing average of daily sunspot numbers ending in August was 23.2. That is up from the previous two periods ending in June and July, but lower than earlier this year. 

U.S. Navy and NOAA predict solar flux values of 76 on September 5-10, 78 on September 11 and 80 on September 12-14. Predicted planetary A index for the same period is 5 on September 8-14. 

Astronaut Chris Hadfield, VA3OOG to be ISS's First Canadian Commander 

Chris Hadfield, VA3OOG, has been designated to lead the International Space Station in 2013. He will be the first Canadian to command the ISS. 

Ham Radio Station in Barcelona Cathedral? 

The Spanish amateur radio team ARMIC ONCE EA3RKR has received special authorization to set-up a ham radio station and transmit from inside Barcelona Cathedral – something unheard so far! 

The even will take place on September 18, and the team would like to invite any radio ham who may be traveling to, or on vacation in Barcelona on this date, to come and operate the station.

VK2APQ Celebrates Age 99 

Some names in the news! First, congratulations to Pierce Healy, VK2APQ, on the celebration of his 99th birthday back on August 13. Pierce Healy was first licensed at the beginning of World War 2 but could not get on the air at that time. In the 1950's he was a member of Australia's New South Wales Division Council and later served as its president. He also served many years as VK2 Federal Councilor and was particularly well known for his amateur radio notes that were published in Radio and Hobbies, the predecessor of Electronics Australia. VK2APQ is also still a regular voice on VK2WI Sunday callback net and a life member of the Wireless Institute of Australia and Australia's New South Wales Division Council. 

Montenegro Accepted to IARU Membership 

The Montenegrin Amateur Radio Pool formed in October 2008, has been accepted as the International Amateur Radio Union member society. The Republic of Montenegro, callsign prefix 4O, declared its independence on June 3, 2006 following a national referendum. It was admitted as the 192nd member of the United Nations on June 28 of that year. 

Ham DX Tips 

Angola, D2. British ham Craig, MM0SSG, is active as D2SG near Luanda for about six months on 80 to 10 meters using CW, SSB and PSK 31. QSL direct to home call. 

Tristan Da Cuhna and Gough Island, ZD9. John, ZS1LF is active as ZD9GI from Gough Island while on work assignment with a South African scientific team. Activity is during his evening hours and weekends on 160 to 10 meters using mostly SSB. QSL to home call. 

B R O A D C A S T T I P S 

India. Local station All India Radio Chennai was heard in Sofia just before the end of its broadcast at 17.40 hours on 4920 kHz. There was an extraordinary sports emission from 17 to 18.35 hours and later on the frequencies of the transmitters in Bhopal on 4810 kHz, in Jaipur on 4910 kHz and in Benguluru on 9425 kHz. 

Brazil. Three local radio stations were received with programs in Portuguese after 19.45 hours: Radio Trans Mundial from Santa Maria on 11735 kHz with pop music, Radio Anhanguera on 11830 kHz with ads and Radio Bandeirantes from Sao Paolo on 11925 kHz with a religious lecture. 

Eritrea. The Radio of Eritrea was with identification signal at 03.56 hours on 9710 kHz and on two frequencies in the 40-meter HAM band on 7165 and 7195 kHz. The station was heard again at 13.50 hours on 7165 and on 7175 kHz, as well as at 05 hours on 7172 and 7195 kHz. 

Ethiopia & China. Radio Ethiopia Home Service is now received with a program in English Monday through Friday on an exact frequency – 9705 kHz instead of 9704.2 kHz. On 9705 kHz after 06 hours broadcasts also local Radio Xinjiang from Urumqi in China. Radio Xinjiang was noted at 11.15 hours also on the parallel frequency of 11975 kHz in the Kyrgyz language. 

Uganda. Radio Uganda English language service has been received in Sofia regularly between 17 and 21 hours on 4976 kHz in spite of the information that the station uses the frequency of 7195 kHz. 

Chad & Croatia. Both Radio Chad and Radio Voice of Croatia were noted at 18.30 hours on odd frequencies on the 6165 kHz channel: Croatia was on 6164.5 kHz and Chad on 6165.5 kHz approximately, resulting in strong interference. 

Angola. Very rarely heard in Sofia, at present Radio Angola is received during the night with a satisfactory signal after 23 hours on 4950 kHz with a program in Portuguese and local languages. The other announced frequency of 7217 kHz produces no signal. 

Korea, Republic of: KBS World Radio in its emissions on Saturdays in English has in its "Letterbox" a DX program between 16.52 and 16.57 hours which is received in Sofia. 

Ireland. Via transmitters in South Africa The Irish Radio will broadcast an extraordinary sports program on September 19 as follows: from 13 to 15 hours on 7265 and 15400 kHz; from 15 to 17 hours on 7265 and 11695 kHz; from 14.30 to 16 hours on 15445 kHz and from 15 to 16.30 hours on 11805 kHz.
