ONE of the region's best-known radio stations celebrates a landmark 40 years on air today.

And BBC WM – which began life as BBC Radio Birmingham – is bringing back a nostalgic line-up of ex-presenters to reflect on its four decades in the business.

Current hosts including Ed Doolan, Phil Upton and Joanne Malin will be joined by former presenters Les Ross, Malcolm Boyden and Alan Dedicoat to take a look at how the region has changed since the station's was launched.

The broadcasters will look back on how the station covered a range of stories over the years, including the Birmingham Pub bombings, Aston Villa's European Cup conquest and the visits of world leaders.

The station went on air on November 9, 1970, broadcasting from its old home, the Pebble Mill studios in Edgbaston. It moved 2004 to BBC Birmingham's new home in the Mailbox from where BBC WM stalwart Ed Doolan was the first person to broadcast.

Ed has worked for WM for 28 years, and has interviewed a host of celebrities world leaders on the station, including Nelson Mandela and every prime minister since Callaghan.

As well as looking back on 40 years of West Midlands history, the station last night hosted a public debate at the University of Birmingham, with panellists including Jasper Carrott and Carl Chinn, to discuss what the future holds for the region.

Highlights from the debate will be broadcast on Friday. Keith Beech, BBC WM's managing editor, said: "It's been four decades of great change within the area, a period that's seen many momentous events and news stories that have placed this area centre stage.

"As well as celebrating 40 years of broadcasting and looking back at the highlights and welcoming back some familiar faces and voices, we also want people's stories of how the area has changed, things they miss and things that they welcome.

"We'll be using the past to look ahead to what's next for the West Midlands and for BBC WM."
