- DX Mix by Ivo Ivanov .

Radio listeners have heard the strange pip and beep signals from their receivers, most frequently on frequencies like 5 000 and 10 000 KHz and others. Those signals are often accompanied by a voice, reading the time in UTC, the former Greenwich Mean Time or GMT. Those transmissions come from the radio stations for Standard Time And Frequency Transmissions or STFT stations. The transmissions are used for synchronizing various types of equipment, for checking radio connections with satellites, etc. Special transmitters using fixed frequencies are used. Listeners could use these frequencies to check if their receivers are well calibrated. Also one can have the most accurate time by tuning to these stations. Some of these stations have published addresses and send QSL cards to listeners. Some of the transmitters of these stations work non-stop, while others are active for a few hours a day. The signals usually last 100 milliseconds, as 61 signals are transmitted in a minute, plus six additional pulses at the end of every hour. The signals can also contain code, for example related to the difference between atomic and astronomical time.

The International Telecommunication Union has defined frequencies to be used for these activities. For example, radio transmissions to satellites are on 25 KHz in combination with 400.1 MHz. There are 16 organizations from 19 countries that use STFT transmitters. There is such an organization that helps navigation in Russia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan, while transmitters in Colorado and Hawaii are used by the US. The power of transmitters also varies - 100 watts in Espoo, Finland to 1 000 kW in Allois, France. Every transmitter has an identification code in voice or Morse code. For example in Argentina it is LOL, HBG is for Switzerland etc. Countries that use STFT are Canada, USA, Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Venezuela, China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom and those already mentioned. 7 countries use only long waves, while 8 use just short waves. Three countries use both. The most used frequencies are 5 000 and 10 000 kHz on which 5 different transmitters work. The pip signals are best heard on 5 000 kHz after sunset, while 10 000 and 15 000 kHz are best heard during the day.

Increase in the solar activity is expected during the coming days, as the solar wind from the coronal holes on the Sun will cause magnetic disturbances. Among the 40 to 60 existing sunspots, the AR1158 spot poses a threat of C-flares directed towards the earth, Disturbances in short-wave reception are expected during the coming week.
Coming up is our radio calendar. On February 12, the Vatican Radio celebrates its 80th anniversary. Radio Luxembourg and the Italian Radio Relay Service were launched in 1932 and 1989, while on the same date in 1950, the European Broadcasting Union was established. On February 13, 1982 the first private radio station in the US started. This was WRNO New Orleans. On February 15 Radio Australia marks 55 years of short-wave transmission.
