Every day radio programmes in different languages are broadcast all over the world. Some of the short-wave transmissions are intended for the local citizens, as this is the case in huge countries like China, India, Russia, some of the countries in Latin America and Central Africa, etc. Such broadcasts are usually in local languages and vernaculars. For example in China in Chinese and languages of the minorities, in Chad, Niger, Indonesia and others in local languages and vernaculars.
On the other hand, international stations such as Radio Bulgaria also exist. Their broadcasts are aimed at foreign listeners on different continents. There are international stations that do not have broadcasts in English, such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Eritrea, etc. Those countries with the most powerful transmitters usually have programmes in English. Almost all international radio stations also have programmes in French and Spanish, also in German, Russian, Standard Chinese, Arabic, and Portuguese. China Radio International, Voice of Russia, Radio Romania International etc. all have programmes in English reaching all continents. Renowned radios like BBC, Voice of America, Deutsche Welle Germany and radios in other developed countries are constantly reducing broadcasts on short waves. With some exceptions these stations broadcast on short waves in English only for the countries in Asia and Africa.
The reasons behind stopping broadcasts on short waves are usually said to be financial but there are also claims that people all over the world are starting to have access to Internet or they have satellite dishes, which is said to make radio unnecessary. However, there is a group of radio stations, which is continuously increasing the number of broadcasts on short waves. These are religious stations that transmit in a number of different languages. Trans World Radio, for example, broadcasts in more than 200 languages and vernaculars on different wavelengths. Just Trans World Radio Europe broadcasts in 70 different languages. Stations such as Family Radio, Adventist World Radio, Far East Broadcasting Company, etc also have broadcasts in a number of languages. Their programmes are religious in content. The Vatican Radio also broadcasts in different languages. Usually, the more widespread religions as Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and Orthodox Christianity are less represented on short waves than other religions.

In conclusion it must be pointed out that general knowledge of English is recommended when listening to short wave broadcasts, as this is the most widespread language in the sphere. Almost every radio station can answer listeners' questions in English and send QSL cards.
