Although one of the morning-show co-hosts was in Budapest, Peterborough's new radio station Magic 96.7 got off to a successful official start on Tuesday morning.
Linda Kash communicated with her fellow co-host Dan Duran via Skype — a program that allows people to talk to each other over the Internet — for the first-ever morning show for the adult-contemporary radio station.
Kash, best known as an actress and improv comedian, is in Hungary filming a mini-series about the sinking of the Titanic.
As Duran talked to listeners from the station headquarters in Peterborough Square, he still easily joked and bantered with Kash, who was in period costume thousands of miles away awaiting to be called back to set where she's portraying the "unsinkable" Molly Brown.
Magic 96.7 reaches listeners in Lindsay, Fenelon Falls, Warkworth, Bobcaygeon and Port Perry, says operations manager Joel Scott.
It's the type of station you'd listen to at the office, he says, and is upbeat but with no hard rock or rap.
The core demographic is women aged 35 to 45, says Scott who oversees staffing at Magic, Star 93.3 as well as 107.9 The Breeze.
Magic has been on air, in a "testing phase" with continuous music since May 13, Scott explains.
This allowed people and industry to see if the frequency interferes with anything other signals such as police communication.
Magic got its "clean bill of health" and officially launched Tuesday at 6 a.m., he says.
A small wrench in the plans was that Kash was overseas, Scott says.
Her mini-series took priority, he says, so if she was needed on-set the radio station had backup recordings ready to use.
Kash, who will eventually be working from Peterborough, is set to co-host with Duran every weekday from 6 to 10 a.m.
She's best known as the angel in the Philadelphia Cream Cheese commercials, although she has appeared in many other productions including Seinfeld, Third Rock from the Sun, Everybody Loves Raymond, Cinderella Man and Man of the Year.
There was an instant chemistry when Kash and Duran started run-throughs together in April.
Duran, a veteran broadcaster who once co-hosted The Dini Petty Show and produced the Humble and Fred Show, says he knew Kash from the acting world in Toronto many years ago and is happy to work with her now that they both live in the Peterborough area.
Kash lives near Bethany while Duran lives in Mount Pleasant.
As the pair bantered on-air Tuesday, Kash talked about being a waitress at The Second City in Toronto before being asked to understudy for a comedian.
It was terrifying to get up on stage, she says.
"I know what terror smells like!" she says, as Duran looks down at the floor, laughing genuinely.
The Magic office is bright and open – with windows in the studio allowing Duran to see people walking by, drinking coffee and snapping photos to document the historic first day.
NOTE: Although Linda Kash had never worked in radio before, she was the first person to come to mind for the morning show, says her fellow host Dan Duran. He says he and operations manager Joel Scott were talking about who could serve as a female co-host. "Joel and I said, "Linda!" almost at the same time," Duran says with a laugh.
