The influence of radio waves emitted by artificial sources on the human body and the health of all living beings on the planet can be divided into two types – one type is the effect of the radio-receiving devices situated in proximity to listeners, and the second type is the effect of the transmitting devices, including radio transmitters and their antennas. According to the recommendations of the World Health Organization, the health regulations of the European Union and other institutions and experts, the admissible levels of electromagnetic radiation that the human body could be harmlessly exposed to are estimated at 2 watts per 10 kg of body weight. Modern research in the field sets this level at 2 watts per 1 kg of body weight.

Ordinary radio listeners using radio receivers, external or internal antennas, amplifiers and other auxiliary equipment are not exposed to dangerous radiation levels. The electromagnetic radiation normal radio listeners are subjected to is many times lower than the admissible levels of 2 watts either per 1 or per 10 kg of body weight. Connecting wiring also poses no danger, especially when they are screened, such as coaxial cables.

Since radio receivers operate with electricity coming from the power grid, having a voltage of 220 V for instance, one should have in mind that an electromagnetic field is formed near the phase conductor or both conductors when they are plugged into a device, with a range of approximately 20 cm, which is of moderate risk to humans and it becomes harmful only when there is exposure over a long period of time. There is also a risk when external antennas are situated immediately next to conductors with voltage of 110, 220, and 380 V, and others.

In the 1970s, the radio station The Voice of America signed an agreement with Israel for the construction of a group of new powerful radio transmitters. Protests on behalf of local residents followed and the construction was suspended. In Bulgaria, a powerful radio transmitter was to be constructed near the Black sea coast in 1991but the protests of the population in the northeastern parts of the country stopped the construction. Legal disputes are still under way in Italy over the transmitters of Radio Vatican.

These and many other similar cases have been caused by the harmful influence of radio transmitters and by harmful effects of the antenna radiation, in particular. During radio transmission, a strong electromagnetic field is formed near antennas. Its dimension is called intensity and it depends on a multitude of factors, such as the power of the transmitter, the power of the antenna signal, the distance to the equipment, the direction of the antenna, the amount of transmitted information, etc. For these and other reasons, designers of radio transmitters and antennas are trying to locate these facilities in remote regions, away from heavily populated regions, although this often entails additional complications, such as providing power supply, cooling, roads, etc. In present day, most countries in the world observe all healthcare regulations related to the construction of radio transmitters.

Radio calendar
On July 10, 1962, the first telecommunications satellite in the world, Telestar 1, was launched into outer space. What is more, two very popular radio stations among radio listeners started their first emissions in the month of July. These were Radio Yaounde from Cameroon on July 14, 1955, and Illimani from Bolivia, whose first broadcast was on July 15, 1933.
