PORTLAND,November 9, 2011----REACHING UP, A hit national weekly interfaith music and interview satellite radio program has moved to Portland from the San Francisco Bay area and hopes to launch a 24/7 radio network on satellite coast-to-coast within 4 months.
Listeners write that the show is unlike anything else on the air, has a heart for people and passionately uplifts them about social justice issues.
Since its launch 5 years ago, the program, also heard in 200 other countries on AM, FM, satellite and shortwave radio and on the internet has had a diverse and stellar array of in-person guests ranging from Caryn Stern CEO of U.S. Committee for UNICEF to Purpose-Driven Life author Pastor Rick Warren, from Israeli music stars Idan Raichel and Rami Kleinstein to Christian contemporary stars Natalie Grant, Delirious, the Newsboys and Mercy Me, Christian filmmaker Dan Merchant. Peace Child Israel director Melisse Boskavich, folk icon Tom Paxton, Giving Voice to Values curriculum director and author Dr. Mary Gentile and dozens of others. Host-interviewer Don Fass has also originated programs from New York, Los Angeles, London, Jerusalem, Rome, Berlin, Dublin and Tel-Aviv.
Local Portland-based guests have already included George Fox University Center for Peace and Justice director Clint Baldwin, Pnai Or rabbi Debra Kolodny, Eastside Church's Pastor Eric Bahme, representatives of Mercy Corps helping people devastated by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, Oakland Jewish Museum director Judy Marglis.
Says Fass, 'we now have plans to raise a modest amount of funding to put the 24/7 version of what we do, Celebrate Radio full-time on coast-to-coast satellite as a voice to bring people of all faiths together to help others and entertain them with an international pop music playlist of 1700 mostly indie songs which we call 'Positively Music.' We're about giving people real hope in these difficult times and encouraging them to love more and develop their own vision for helping each other.'
Once launched, the new network, which will include 10 newsbreaks a day and 3 dozen programs and features will also be able to be heard full-time on the internet in addition to those across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Caribbean and Australia and excerpted to listeners in Central and South America on shortwave radio and on AM radio from Rome to Central Europe and FM radio in Israel.
Produced by a 20-year old non-profit, Streetcats Foundation, which got its name from working with streetkids and runaways in New York and Los Angeles, the group producing the radio broadcasts, with decades of broadcast experience, has already started to partner wit h several Portland faith congregations and launched a fledgling resource website for Portland area teens and an interfaith Portland City Spirit faith communities resource site. Their aim is to not only launch the 24/7 network and bring the weekly music and interview show to Portland area radio but to be catalysts for the start of several new off-the-air community programs to help people and bring them together here.
