London based pirate station Rinse FM has been awarded an official radio licence.
Founded in 1994, Rinse FM has become a legend amongst pirate radio stations. Usually short lived, the station has been broadcasting for over a decade showcasing drum 'n' bass, garage, dubstep and more.
In that time the station has launched countless careers, helping to spawn entire genres. Currently Rinse FM is broadcasting through the internet, with guest presenters including Plastician, Roska, Skream and more.
Now the underground station is set to be rewarded with an official radio license. Rinse FM will be available to hear legally later this year, broadcasting from its base in London.
The application for legal status was supported throughout the music industry. Rinse FM has always acted as an important conduit for youth culture, with its open minded roster helping to spawn new talent.
In a press release Rinse FM celebrated the news, listing a number of quotes from influential figures in the music industry. Former punk turned politician Feargal Sharkey - CEO of UK Music - argued that the license means that the station can take a step forward.
"I am hugely impressed with Rinse FM and their groundbreaking work in support of new
artists, many of whom are now household names" he said. "With a community licence in place, we believe the station can take that role forward - engaging with a young, dynamic audience and nurturing the next generation of inner city talent on which our industry and nation is so dependent."
Former DJ Dizzee Rascal toasted the news. "Rinse FM was inspirational and influential to my journey" he explained. "Listening to my peers on the radio when I was growing up helped give me a drive, focus and subsequently an outlet for my music when otherwise there would have been none."
Meanwhile, dubstep guru Skream broke out the champagne. "It's great being on a station that is so diverse. If it weren't for Rinse I wouldn't hear a lot of the music I hear - I wouldn't even know about it. Rinse keeps London buzzing full of different flavours. Rinse is still here 'cos the world couldn't hack it if they weren't".
