Along with four media genres and the establishment of video image radio and transport channels, Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) has made a breakthrough in all aspects for its stronger growth in the future.

Journalists across the country are celebrating the 85thanniversary of Vietnam's Revolutionary Press Day (June 21). Throughout the history of the Vietnamese press, VOV has always been at the frontline of disseminating the Party and State's guidelines and policies, greatly contributing to promoting Vietnam's socio-economic development as well as its image to international friends.

Over the past 65 years, VOV has steadily developed with its print newspaper coming out in 1998, VOVNews Online appearing in 1999 and video image radio and VOV transport channels going on air in 2009. VOV has now become one of a few media agencies that embraces four media genres.

VOV recently inaugurated the National Radio Centre that had been built in two years but it is quite up to international standard. On August 29 last year, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung pressed the button to start the East Sea broadcasting project at the VN1 transmitter station in Hanoi's Son Tay town. This shows VOV's constant efforts to expand its radio coverage over the whole country and also overseas in order to fulfill its major political tasks.

To mark the 85th anniversary of Vietnam's Revolutionary Press Day, VOVNews Online interviewed VOV Deputy Director General Hoang Minh Nguyet on VOV's developments in recent years and its future plan.

Reporter: In the golden era of radio information and technology, VOV has all four media genres fully fledged. Could you elaborate on the results of VOV's operation?

Mrs Nguyet:  With a combination of four media genres (broadcast, print, online and video radio image), VOV's information volume has increased by four fold. Apart from radio programmes, VOVNews online newspaper can keep people updated with information where radio signals may fail to reach them. News stories broadcast on radio channels are also covered in VOV newspaper as reading material.

To promote the dissemination of information, all VOV editorial departments have daily briefings to exchange ideas about how to improve their programming.

Reporter: As one of the biggest media agencies in Vietnam with large numbers of both listeners and readers at home and abroad, how is VOV interactive with the public?

Mrs Nguyet: By providing information about the Party's policies and the State's laws and publishing articles on socially negative phenomena as well as exemplary role models, VOV has helped raise public awareness of issues emerging in every section of society and in return has received strong feedback from both listeners and readers via thousands of phone calls.

On the other hand, VOV has been credited with helping ministries, sectors and State agencies work out solutions to deal with urgent issues effectively and properly.

Since the launch of the VOV Transport Channel in 2009, VOV has attracted a larger number of listeners who are interested in one of the greatest priorities that is to reduce traffic jams and accidents and bring benefits to the community.

Reporter: VOV has signed many cooperation projects with other state ministries and agencies. Does this have any effect on VOV's communication work?

Mrs. Nguyet: The cooperation has been very effective as both parties can identify specific measures, duties and responsibilities to step up communication work. It is also VOV partners' commitment to provide VOV reporters with adequate information about their work to improve the quality of articles which can help ministries and agencies receive the people's approval.

The cooperation also helps VOV work effectively with ministries and agencies to find solutions to problems.

Reporter: In addition to cooperating with state agencies, VOV has strengthened cooperation with international counterparts. Could you tell us about the outcome of the cooperation?

Mrs. Nguyet: VOV has also attached great importance to the improvement of its role in the region as well as in the world. VOV is now a member of several regional and international broadcasting organizations like the Asian-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), and the French-Speaking Radio and Television International Council (CIRTEF). The VOV General Director is now CIRTEF president.

Through international cooperation, VOV has raised its prestige in the region and in the world; accessed advanced broadcasting technologies, utilized international assistance in professional training, and boosted mutual understanding between VOV and other radio broadcasting stations.

Reporters: VOVNews online is another effective means of communication which has helped extend VOV radio coverage. What is your opinion about the role of VOVNews in promoting communication work?

Mrs.Nguyet: Since its establishment 10 years ago, VOVNews has become an important information channel. The quality of articles has considerably improved over time to contribute to the success of VOV.

In the context of technological development, VOVNews needs to further apply digital technology and effectively exploit the strength of other VOV channels to meet public expectations.

Reporter: Thank you very much
