This is Radio Bulgaria's weekly DX Program for radio amateurs and short wave listeners which is included in our one-hour broadcasts starting as follows: Friday at 21.00 UTC on 5900 and 7400 kHz beamed to West Europe, at 23.00 UTC and Saturday at 02.00 UTC on 9700 and 11700 kHz to North America, as well as in the half-hour broadcast at 06.30 UTC on 9600 and 11600 kHz to West Europe.

In this issue by DX Editor Dimiter Petrov, LZ1AF, with Broadcast Tips by Rumen Pankov:

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity

The US Department of Commerce, NOAA, Space Weather Prediction Center has released the following for 2-28 June (extracts):

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at high levels at the beginning of the period from 2-6 June. Normal background levels are expected for 7- 9 June followed by another increase to high levels for 10-12 June in response to a recurrent high speed stream. Normal background levels should predominate thereafter until 26 June when another increase to high levels is expected due to recurrence.

The geomagnetic field is expected to be unsettled for 2-3 June due to persistent effects from a high speed stream. Quiet levels are expected for 4-6 June, followed by an increase to mostly unsettled levels on 7-8 June in response to a high speed stream from a coronal hole. Quiet conditions should return for 9-15 June, followed by another interval of unsettle levels on 16-17 June due to another recurrent high speed stream. Quiet levels should prevail for 18-24 June, followed by yet another increase to unsettled to active levels for 25-28 June in response to a recurrent coronal hole.

The Sun's Recent Behavior is Odd, Solar Scientists Agree

Solar physicists at the semiannual meeting of the American Astronomical Society held in Miami this week offered a number of mechanisms to shed light on what has been happening on the sun of late, but conceded that the final answer - or more likely answers - remains opaque.

One researcher has looked for clues to solar weather in the meridional flow, which moves from the solar equator toward the poles, and which seems to change speed during the shifting solar cycle. Another looked at the solar "jet stream," a slow current that originates at solar mid-latitudes and pushes in a bifurcated stream toward both the equator and the poles. Another scientist examined the inner workings of the sun through the oscillation of sound waves through the solar interior; yet another looked at magnetic maps to chart the shifting flux across the sun.

"I think we're almost in violent agreement that this is an interesting minimum," said David Hathaway of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. By several measures – geomagnetic activity, weakness of polar magnetic fields, flagging solar deflection of galactic cosmic rays – the minimum was the deepest on record, although some of those records contain just a few cycles. Hathaway focused on shifting speeds of the meridional flow, finding that the flow was anomalously fast at the most recent minimum. But, speaking of heliophysics forecasting techniques in general, he cautioned against leaping to any conclusion based on small-number statistics.

Based on current data, Julia Saba of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland said, the next solar cycle looks like it will be weak and prolonged.

Ethiopia. Local Radio Oromya from Adama has been received in Sofia with a loud signal on 6030 kHz at the beginning of its broadcasts at 03.25 hours and also before closing down at 19 hours. Radio Voice of Tigray was heard at 02.55 hours on 5950 kHz, as well as on its new frequency of 5940 kHz. At the same timed Radio Fana begins its broadcasts on 6110 and 7210 kHz.

Eritrea. Eritrean Radio was heard on May 31 on its new frequency of 7190 kHz ending the program at 19 hours. Due to their mutual deliberate jamming Eritrea and Ethiopia often change frequencies and show up in the 40 meter amateur band from 7100 to 7200 kHz. For example, at 16 hours were noted stations from both countries on 7110, 7145, 7165, 7175 and 7190 kHz.

India. A local station from the capital New Delhi broadcasting on 5015 kHz was heard in Sofia between 16.50 and 17.30 hours with a program in English. All India Radio Overseas Service was noted on a new frequency – 9940 kHz for its emissions in English from 17.45 to 19.45 hours and from 20.45 to 22.30 hours. At 13.30 hours the station was received in English on 9690 and 11620 kHz and on 13710 kHz in French.

China. Two local stations were reported with western pop music concerts between 17.30 and 17.55 hours: Xizang Radio from Urumchi on 4820, 6050 and 7240 kHz and Xinjiang Radio from Lhasa, Tibet on 6015 and 7340 kHz.

South Africa & Australia. A unregistered broadcast in English from Deutsche Welle was received in Sofia from 18.30 to 19 hours on June 2 on 9500 kHz and afterwards was heard the ID of Trans World Radio Swaziland, followed by news in English from Radio Australia at 19.01 hours.

Guinea, Conacry. Radio Guinea has appeared again on short wave on 7125 kHz from the capital Conacry. The emissions are rather irregular but more often in Sofia are received those with news in French at 19 hours. The frequency in the 40 meter amateur band!

Israel. Military Radio Galei Thahal broadcasting news and music is received in Sofia round the clock on 6973 and 15785 kHz. The same program is also emitted in USB mode on 5104 and 6821 kHz.

Mongolia. Radio Voice of Mongolia was observed with a faint signal and distorted modulation in Sofia on 12085 kHz where between 09 and 11 hours were emitted half-hour programs in Japanese, Mongolian, Chinese and English.

Nigeria. According to an announcement from Radio Voice of Nigeria, as of June 1 its broadcasts in English are as follows: on 9690 kHz from 09 to 15 hours and from 19 to 20 hours and on 15120 kHz from 05 to 07 and from 18 to 19 hours.

Philippines. Identification signal and a march noted the beginning of an emission of Radio Veritas Asia at 13 hours on 9590 kHz, heard with a weak signal in Sofia. However, their emission in Russian is received well at 15 hours on 9570 kHz.

With this we have come to the end of our weekly DX Program. Your opinions and suggestions will be appreciated and all reception reports confirmed with the QSL card of Radio Bulgaria. Please address your letters to English Section, Radio Bulgaria, Sofia, Bulgaria or by e-mail to english@bnr.bg .An online reception report form is available at www.bnr.bg - click on English and navigate.
